| Eastney Barracks circa 70s Brian Dunks the part time Bugle Major and full time garage proprieter made a rare appearance for Bugle practice.....he asked full time Bugler and part time comedian Spud Murphy to sing the alert.... Murphy duly responded .. Toyota Anglia FOOORD,... Fiat........ exit one very upset Bugle Mechanic.!!! |

Can anyone remember the words to reveille that went something like:
Wakey wakey get up and wash your self wakey wakey lash and stow
Does any one also know why it was called Charlie reveille?

I can only remember Reveille at Deal as being Cold, Windy, Wet, and Dark.... and you had to bluebell the frigging bell from HMS Swiftsure,,, or even worse that great b'stard shell case from the Knocke battery where-ever that is!!!!! Whilst dressed in Blues and a greatcoat. The shell case had a huge condom shaped cover that Junior Buglers used to pour tea into... which when you took it off spilt all over you!!!! Enough to make you change over!!!
I look back on those days fondly and realise that it was character building and probably made me the man I am today... warped...sadistic... with an insane hatred of bluebell, brass, and fu**ing six in the morning.!!!!

 Oh.there's so many stories Len. The last time I saw his book, it was called "Random Facts and Figures By George Coad", and it was either Dan or Dave Smith who had it. No doubt it became a much thicker novel after my departure. The last entry at that time was when he had gone fishing on the river Tay in Perth(a tidal river).. George had become so engrossed in all things "fishy" and wonderful, he didn't notice the water gradually surrounding him...He ended up being rescued from up a tree on an island in the midle of the Tay..  ...He blamed EVERYTHING apart from himself for that one......AND made the national press......
Oh GEORGE, RIP my friend..you soooo made life very entertaining... |

Hi Len.... good dit but it was at CTCRM he went past the dias down the hill to the old sickbay. The gospel according to St George is held by Tom Gallagher, its a brown pussers text book... there all in there... pulling the QE2... so hot in Kuwait the SLR barrels melted...!!!!

Oh come on Dan..We can't leave that one unfinished....
As most will know by now, in' 73 Graham Hoskins  pulled a Fabbo Gig for us at FOSNI...A 10 day Full Board Cruise on QE2...AND it was Cat 4..This could probably deserve a thread of it's own, but we wouldn't like to upset the then "Yotties" who tried to steal it from us, but who ended up playing us off from Soton... ...anyway, not the story....
GEORGE COAD(RIP) had done his homework on physics and all things nautical, and announced in the coffeee boat in Rosyth that if the QE2 was berthed in still calm water(eg Hogganfield Loch).. Ooooohhh the image..you could pull her along the water with a piece of string between your teeth... Don't laugh...GEORGE was quite serious, and also working on the theory of Helicopters flying upside down... ....

Geordie Rowell and I tried pulling the QE2 whilst on the 73 trip.... we could not even lift any slack out of the bow rope let alone pull it...still George was bigger than us!!!!
George obviously got the upside down helicpter right as the Lynx and maybe several others can do it now!!! He was obviouly designing them whilst fishing!!

Going back to the Brian Dunks Dit, I remember Malc Thompson rehearsing an Eb Trumpet fanfare with four of us that Brian had to conduct. When we had got it right, Tommo went to get Brian who suddenly appeared with his sleeves rolled up covered in grease with an exhaust pipe in his hand. Doh!! ( circa 1976 me thinks )  |
