Hi,

I have just joined the forum and am glad there is somewhere I can talk to people who have actually served in RMBS. I some questions about the audition that I cannot seem to find the answer to.

Would I expect to be turned away with only one instrument to showcase?

Can I audition on a drum kit?

I have my Degree in Popular Music Performance and I am interested in joining the Drum Corps as a Bugler. I play the drum kit at Grade 8 and have experience playing gigs and events including Glastonbury in a Samba Band. I also have grade 5 theory but barely have to use it as I only played the drum kit. My concern is that I have only been taught the drum kit and nothing else. I do have some experience on bongos, repinique and snare drum as I played in the Samba Band however (lots of fun).

It may be worth mentioning I have an application for the Royal Marines Commandos currently and will be doing a fitness test in the upcoming weeks. I just don't want to make the wrong decision as percussion is my first love.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Kish & welcome to the forum.  Things are pretty quiet round these parts but you are lucky as although I rarely post I just happened upon your post.

For the record I served as a percussionist in the RMBS for 24-years although I left many years ago (2004) I'm pretty confident things haven't changed that much.

In answer to your first question - yes.  Although to serve in the RMBS as a percussionist you would also be required to perform on all the major percussive instruments as well as the drum kit so some knowledge of notation would be of use if you wished to serve in this role.  It is understood that not everyone has access to timpani, tuned percussion etc prior to joining but if you understand notation it would be of benefit at audition.

Your experience & skills on the drum kit are certainly transferable to the Corps of Drums especially if you can ably demonstrate your rudiments at audition although you have the added trauma of attempting to get something pleasantly audible out of a Bugle.

There is nothing to stop you (if accepted) furthering your interest in the drum kit & percussion whilst serving as a Bugler.

I wish you luck with your RMBS application and for the RM Commandos (if not already done so check out this site http://www.royalmarines.uk).  Something to note is that the first 15-weeks of RMBS training is now undertaken at CTCRM so you will be no stranger to the bottom field if accepted in either branch of the RM.
