He did Last Post as a solo up in the Gods at the only Royal Tournament I did in 1977. Never missed a note and made it sing every time...
I'm sure somebody who knows him better will tell us more!
Matelot Palmer was the solo bugler at the 1974 RT, playing Sunset at the end of " Battle of Trafalgar"! By the summer of 1977, he was well into his recruit training at CTCRM _________________ Once a Bugler, always a Turtle !!

Ahah..!!! Thanks Mac. Now I've got him. Yes he was a very reliable and competent player. (as you all were/are/will be in the future) of course... _________________ The road to a friend's house is never long..

When I wrote it, I thought I might be wrong, but I only did the 1977 RT! Brain's obviously addled. What was the theme for the one I did then? I know we marched on to Blaze Away, because on the last night I dosed my march cards with lighter fuel and marched on literally blazing away - wonder how many in the audience noticed... _________________ ITMA!
I have to make this point.... the standard of bulging in the RM at the moment is frightingly high... I have heard a bugler at various funerals and yesterday at our RMACB concert in yeovil. I am informed that they have aural lessons, singing lessons, and are taught by Jon Yates. They are excellent, and I won't hear a word said agin' them.
Was that alright, Deli?
In my opinion the standard has always been high !! x
My highly untrained ear has always told me that there has never......and will never......be a higher quality of bugling and drumming than that of todays Royal Marines _________________ Forgive me .I never could spel but I keep trying
Matelot Palmer was in the Boys BUgle band at HMS Ganges, loved it so much he changed over to become a bugler. Did a few years during which time he excelled at the two Royal Tournaments mentioned then decided his future lay with the more active side of the Corps and changed over. great guy and a dangerous/lively run ashore.
If I remember right he was only knee high to a grasshopper but built like a brick building.
