It has been announced that he died in Deal on Saturday 17th April 2009
and the funeral will take place in Walmer during the week of 28th April [to be announced] His wife has asked the all stars to form a band and so if you want to play and have not had the invitation then contact Dave Cole

No apologies for announcing this here. Sir Martin was not a bandy but he was a champion of the band service and active in Deal wherever committee's or charitys needed work.

Sad news, Sir Martin was indeed a champion of the Band Service. I remember his speech post 22 Sept.

RIP Sir...

Remember General Garrod well from  time in RMB Stonehouse, when he was the Brigadier. He used to run the BFT's with us and gave us the incentive not to be beaten by a much older man.

RIP Sir

What a great guy and a sad loss to all that knew him.  He was my Lt Housemaster of Neptune House ans was really great at looking after us 14year olds.
The next time I met him was when I was the SNCO of the Mountbatten Concerts and also the "Beat retreat " office in London and he was the CG.  He recalled a shooting incident with a Colt 45 that myself & Dick Ward had on the Pistol Range on the Drill Field!  (It was his Pistol)
Again, A great guy and a sad loss to all.
RIP

Well said. Sir Martin's heart-felt oration after the Deal attrocity nearly 20 years ago not only demonstrated his passion for the Band Service, but also and what a great man he was. His comments in the face of such an horrific event were inspiring and unforgetable.

A very sad loss.

Found this write up on the MOD Oracle the Troops might be interested to read, quite a character, even after he had retired from the mob:
