| Cant exactly remember which ag show it was but but I think it was a stonehouse job?? Tug Wilson was dispatched to inform the commentator of the names of the Officer and Drum Major. We all form up and await the anouncement. 'And now the Royal Marines Band, conducted by Captain John Ware and led by Drum Major Wallace Arnold........!!!!' we marched on - no one could play a note! |

Nick,. It was the first gig we did after the Canberra cruise, the Preston Tattoo' 1983.
I am sure it was Brian Short who gave the info' to the commentator. Instead of Challis and Brownrigg, he announced, Drum Major Wallace Arnold and Bandmaster Gravy Browning.

| quite right mac, I remember staying in a grot in Preson called the stag hotel. When we went to breakfast the landlady gave us a choice of cornflakes or prunes, and that was it it no fry up or anything else. |

Too much Nigerian Lager and prune rum Geordie. You're getting confused with two different gigs.
The time that you refer to, was when the Band stayed in numerous B&B's in Preston while performing at the 1979 Blackburn Tattoo. Do you recall, that for most days of that job, it rained very hard and so we spent most of the time in Preston, in pubs and on full Subs.
The Hotel you mentioned, was shite! Only the first few, who were quick enough, were lucky enough to get sufficient hot water for a shower.
The old bat of a Land Lady, even accused us of nicking her Cape DE Monte
statue. Her old man also had locked the fire escape doors.
Those of us who stayed there, certainly got the short straw. JT moved out but we had to stay put.
For the Preston Tattoo, again we were billeted in various B&B's, none as bad as the other one.
Nearly forgot. Do you remember when leaving the Blackburn show ground in the coach, the Bandmaster told us to make like we were not leaving, so we did not upset the pongo bands, who had to remain. LoL
That was the same gig that someone stood with a band, ready to march on, unfortunately it was the wrong band! It was because of a pongo band with helmets simular to ours.

| Many many years ago, the Nore Command (Chatham) Band were in I think it was Grimsby for some fishing festival. We were billetted in various private houses for the night. Well if I remember correctly all of the streets in the area in which we were to stay are, or at least 'were', all laid out in the same way with each house number in each street in exactly the same location,ie; No. 10 next to a street light,or tree on the Pavement. Now two of our intrepid members and I can't remember their names, had been on the town and returned to their accom and entered and mounted the stairs only to find that they were in the wrong house. They were accommodated for the night however, in the local "Nick'. Much explaining to do to the Boss in the morning. I wonder if those two if they see this will add any furthur comments. |

Same gig....do you remember what car Coker had at that time?
We stayed in a guest house in Preston so were okay!
The Stag was nicknamed 'The Caribou!'
Boy, didn't it rain at Blackburn Tattoo! We only did the rehearsal then, due to the deluge, had 3 days on the pi$$!
