Well blow me!
(Form an orderly queue!)
Just popped in to see what I've been missing for a few days and found this thread and all you lovely people (no, really - you are) have added your comments to a most unexpected thread.
Thank you one and all.
It'd have been really great if my Force hadn't sent the medal to my Div HQ, making it unavailable on Friday for the CC to pin on me chest.
So, they gave him someone elses to stick on me.

HB
Did you give it back, or do a runner with it? _________________ .

Seriously - I told 'em I was holding it ransom 'cos I knew that if I gave it back I'd have to go and find me own medal.
I dropped it into my pocket and said I was serious, they weren't getting it back until I had mine. You should have seen their faces!! Waaahhhhhh, they thought I was joking at first.
Worked wonders! 20 mins later they gave me a slip of paper telling me where mine was and I know damn well that if I'd just handed the bogus medal back to them, I'd have had to do my own detective work.
Once again, those that know me out there know that's exactly how it happened - I still love looking senior officers in the eye and telling them stuff they don't want to hear... well, you have to have a bit of fun in life don't you think?

HB,
I can see the ACPO ranks faces now....all sucking on lemons, "A frontliner dared to speak up!" We'll de-brief him later, ( Pol service thing!) Had all the "student constables" swept up and freshly painted everything that remained still for longer than 2 minutes?

D'yknow what K?
'Students' (no longer known as recruits) are wrapped up in cotton wool these days for fear of upsetting the poor darlings. It's a creeping malaise that I'm sure we've all seen and loathed for years now.
When I was (here we go again!) a trainer, we (the trainers) had to put up a marquee the day before the parade and then take it down again immediately following it, before doing a bomb-burst to our respective kennels for the w/e. Of course, we got the recruits to help and all of us just got on with it and only complained when a bone broke or an artery was sliced through.
Of course, we were tough in those dim and distant days - and didn't want the very real ramifications of our perceived whinging. Bullying, victimisation etc...
I dunno, sometimes I think all this transparency actually ties us up in knots - when a good stiff bollocking could sort out so much. The officers (including the old and bold) are now far too aware of the fact that everything has to be done by the book nowadays. Most bollockings (where anyone is brave enough to still administer them) are challenged and any perceived inconsistency is argued to the point that the original slight is forgotten and the issue becomes the line manager's lack of skill in actually managing... (Luckily, I'm so brill that I don't have this problem!!!)
OK, rant over. Didn't mean to write this much! - Carry on again _________________ If you're being chased by a police dog, try not to go through a tunnel, then on to a little seesaw, then jump through a hoop of fire. They're trained for that.
