hiya i applied to join the marine band in march but i got told to take up violin and re apply next year. :( im just wondering if anyone knows if they would still want me to be playing trumpet, clarinet, piano as well as violin next year? and what standard would they expect me or hope for me to achieve by march in violin? thanks :D

Well, I joined up on Clarinet and Violin in 1971 and I did not have a scooby about any of them. I tried to join up on Cornet, which I did have a scooby about, but other people auditioning at the time were better and hence the option to try out the Clarinet and Violin. I can't say I was overly keen on the box (Leader of 2nds and ocassional 1st bike) ...but I made a half decent Clarinet and eventually a Saxomophonist. Don't give up trying to get in if that's what you really want, but persevere. The combinations of different instrumentation that would suit you could possibly be Clarinet and Violin, or Cornet and Violin. It is better to have knowledge of a string and either brass or woodwind instruments as this will help later on when attending various courses. ie M1's or BM's. Just keep at it. Good luck...
