I prefer the idea that people can surf in and see what's happening without registering. I'm sure locking it down to people who have to join would keep the odd newcomer from joining.

I agree with the last two posts. If we lock it out to potential new joiners, do we not become our own exclusive little club, or clique ?

This is fabulous great fun, but without the refreshing new blood now and then, we would all eventually get bored with each other and become grumpy old men (and greenfairies).

So, allow the lurkers, and encourage them in. Just get rid of the spammers. bots, and crap.

As a moderator I was getting threaders at having to delete and clean up offensive material that guests were posting in General. At the moment they cant post anywhere, and that suits me just fine. It has been great not having to plough through unwanted posts in the mornings (and lately all through the day) Im ok with them having a look about, but Deli has done the right thing blocking all posting to non-registered users. I'm happy for it to stay the way it is.

However.......for all those lurkers out there, the forum will get bigger and better with more input, so if you want it to carry on entertaining you then join in and register. It's free to join and the more the merrier.

On this one; I have listened and accept that it is better to leave things as they are even though it is the minority view. The spamming has stopped and the change in the registration process has stopped the 'bot' registration. Locking the suggested areas to 'registered view' only would force people to register but may dissuade some casual readers from looking. The majority of lurkers will register and post given time but need time to read and get the feel of the forum. All of the ex's know the sense of humour and can slip into the mode fairly easily... they just have to jump and make that first post and I'm certain they would soon get their dits out.

In the words of someone far wiser than me "If it ain't broke; don't fix it"

Maybe a big sticky post at the top of the forum enouraging people to register and giving step-by-step instructions would help?

I know it's not hard to register but sometimes people are put off by the thought of it and those who aren't internet junkies might get confused by all the spaces that can be filled in on the registration page.

Just a thought

Having to register helps our online security to some extent.

Being very new here, having only registered this forenoon .. I don't wish to cause offence ..

But on the other Site which I use on a regular basis ("Once a Marine Always a Marine") we have enormous problems with "Walts" & wannabee Booties (Dan Archer can confirm this) .. it has been suggested there that some form of site security be introduced ..

IMHO,"Guest" users should be able to look at certain sections but not post in any section .. until registered as full Members .. I don't think it's being "cliquey" sp ? ... more a case of having space to talk with those whose interests are on the same wavelength without the constant drivel of those who have nothing worthwhile to contribute .. that's my two penn'orth (for what it's worth) ...

Cheers,

Kev.

Hi Kev and welcome.......Walts are far more easily spotted in here as the age range covers a few years and bandies and bulgers have long memories!!! I think the balance is about right here..if your a gen bootie you get into countermarch...if not you are limited to the other sections. i quite enjoy posts by the public.....wish we had more of our guys joining though. There are some seriously good guys out there who i know would enjoy this site if they only contributed.

Dan
