The guy front right has the white lanyard and there are 3 with dodgy socks!
Dodgy socks are 2 in the front row: right and second from the left and the guy left hand side of second row.

Hi Rab,
the socks issue is quite a funny one actually , I didn't take it as a derogatory remark in any way, honestly. I welcome your input, everyone's input , the more the merrier.
I think the comment regarding the lanyard is one of concern. So , my dad is wearing the lanyard of which commando ?
My dads service record and the info on the rear of the photo both state that he was in 40 commando at this period although 4 weeks later he did actually transfer to 42 commando.
I'm getting confused.

He's not wearing a unit lanyard, just Bugler's dress cords, this should help you though:
In World War II the 1st RM Battalion wore a white lanyard, and artillery men in the RM Division in 1940–3 wore a plaited knife lanyard (on the right shoulder), as worn by the Royal Artillery.
Unit lanyards are worn by all ranks in Commandos in Lovat Dress, and earlier when in KSD and khaki battle dress. These lanyards, originally naval lanyards dyed, are worn on the right shoulder, and since the mid–1950s have been single cotton braid lanyards with a ‘Turks head’ slip knot.
The Commando lanyards were — and are for those not disbanded: dark blue for those in HQ Commando Forces and the Logistic Rgt; dark green for HQ 3 Cdo Bde; light blue 40 Cdo; old gold 41 Cdo; white 42 Cdo; scarlet 43 Cdo; scarlet 45 Cdo; old gold/scarlet Comacchio Coy/Grp; old gold/rifle green 539 Assault Sqn;and dark blue/light blue 847 naval Air Sqn.

The 4th bugler from the right i would swear is Robbie ( shits) Evernden. ( some people just don't change). To his left is Alan Piner?

Right click and save picture as to your local drive. OPen with MIcrosoft picture viewer and use the zoom function.
If you have problems I can cut and zoom onto the forum but it is fairly easy to do onto your local machine.

General Melchett : real helpful explanation that as it was starting to confuse the issue regarding my dad's commando unit at the time. I should really have gone wiht my first instinct which was that it was a bugler's dress cord.

Bronco : You know these chaps well (Robbie and Alan) ?

Robbie was a Sgt bugler (instructor )at Deal when i joined in 1972. he was promoted soon after to c/sgt before retirement around 1975? Alan was a well established bugler who served well beyond the normal retirement age of 40yrs. He has i believe, two sons and a daughter currently serving in the Band service.

I will pass your details onto somebody in BRNC band. I'm sure someone in the Corps of drums has contact with one of alan Piners offspring. as for Robie, i last saw him in Deal about one Year ago. Hopefully someone reading this thread will pass on your message. good Luck.
