Hi John, I don't know how old this thread is but if it's recent, get it sorted and get well soon. If it's an old thread then I hope you are all okay now.

Good News! I popped in to where JC works and they say he's out of danger and out of the ICU. They don't know how long he's likely to be kept in but he's back on the ward and cracking dirty jokes which only a bulger can tell! !! A good sign methinks!!!    Keep up the recovery John!!

JCs partner Elaine has asked me to pass on her thanks for all your good wishes.  She has passed them on to John.  Although he is off the ventilator, he is still very poorly and is now in HDU, which is one step down from ICU, so we're going in the right direction!! Hope to be able to visit him when he gets a bit better.

Update:
Firstly let me say a big thank you to all the messages posted here, Elaine did print them off and bring them into show me in ICU. What a great family the RM Band is.
The sequence of events as I’ve been told went something like – the night of 11/12th December was coughing and having difficulty breathing, early hours Elaine tried to call the Local Doctor, but got no response, I got worse so she dialled 999 for an ambulance, after that all gets a bit hazy for me. They took me straight to ICU at Margate Hospital and pumped me full of oxygen for 24 hours but I was still going down hill, they then decided to put me on a ventilator machine to breath for me.
After 2 days I started showing signs of improvement and on the 3rd day they turned the ventilator off as I was capable of breathing on my own, although I still had to have a face mask on to pump oxygen at me in great amounts. Over the next 8 or 9 days they gradually reduced the amount of oxygen I was getting until it was low enough so that I could be downgraded to HDU (High Dependency Unit)
I was told that I had picked up a nasty little bug called Strep-pneumonia and had double Pneumonia.
Christmas Eve morning about 08:30 the physio girl come to see me and put me through a series of questions and physical tests to see if I was fit enough to go home for Christmas.
Anyone that has done the Endurance Course at Lympstone will know what I mean when I kept getting this mental picture of the cartoon on the way back down to Barracks that says ‘It’s only Pain, 500 metres to go,’ any way I just managed to scrape through all her tests and the Dr said as long as I was still OK at 18:00hrs and hadn’t gone down hill again I could go home. Thankfully all was well and they discharged me with a bucket full of medicine Xmas Eve night.
Still a long way to go and I have to go back in a month for a lung function test to see what damage has been done.
The really sad bit was when I got home Elaine sat me down and told me about Malcolm Thompson. I was completely unaware he ad been admitted a couple of days after me to the same ICU with the same or similar problems. Between the DRs, Nurses and Elaine they had decided to keep it from me, knowing that it would be too upsetting for me to handle in the condition I was in. How right she was and I have left my condolences on his thread. RIP Malc
