It is with regret to have to inform you of the passing of Bandmaster Don Chippy Carpenter in New Zealand at 0130 hours on the 3 April 2006 from the dreaded cancer. There was no funeral as Don has been given over to medical science and the Registrar at Auckland Hospital was absolutely thrilled at his gesture.
In lieu of a funeral, a tree planting ceremony was held at the Chelsea Sugar Refinery Park in Birkenhead. Present were his family and members of the RNNZ Band, of which Don was the past Director of Music. Petty Officer Musn Jo Spears sounded Last Post and Reveille. Also present were ex RMBs Vince Harris, Joe Simms, Dave Pierson, Alf Smith, myself and Bill Hartland who was at this time on holiday in New Zealand. It appears that Don and Bill had served together at some time, so it was a stroke of good fortune that Bill was there to say his final farewell.
After the ceremony we adjourned to the family home for morning tea and a few reminisces.
Joy Carpenter wishes to thank all who sent messages of condolence and warm thoughts at this sad time.
