| Been a while since I posted here. I have my audition november 16th and I'm getting real nervous about it. I've read all I can on what I need for audition. Being at a military school the PT aspect of things are no worry for me. I can run the 2.4 km's in 9 minutes and do close to 80 pushups in 2 minutes and about the same amount of situps. I have 2 snare solos prepared and I'm working on getting all my bugle calls down. I have a private tutor here at school working onmy theory and aural skills but the part I'm getting really nervous about it the herald trumpet. I haven't really done any work on that and I don't know how much I'm expected to know... |

| I think I live just a short distance away from plymouth, only an 8 hour flight haha. I'm not so much worried about finding a herald to play on, we have a herald trumpet squad here at school with a whole bunch of horns to practice on although i do greatly appreciate the offer. I'm just trying to find out how much i need to be able to play come november. |

Don't forget Oxide, they're looking for potential, enthusiasm and a degree of talent - not the complete package.
To me, you sound like you're gonna do well - at least you're doing some ground work.
Keep up the practice to give yourself confidence then go and give it your best shot and see what happens, remember they're not looking for the finished article, rather, someone they can mould into a professional in the style for which the RMBS is famous.
By all means have a blow on the heralds - indeed, make it a priority. But don't bust your balls, after all how many poeple are grade 8 on them before joining?
Go for it and good luck to you. Don't forget to let us know how you get on. _________________ ITMA! |

The Herald Trumpet (Yak Horn) is indeed a difficult beast to master as the harmonies are very close together. I wouldn't worry too much about learning that prior to your audition as full tuition will be given if/when you are accepted. Good luck. _________________ Wine is meant to be drunk............I am drunk.............Therefore am I wine??

How things have changed, I'm pretty certain I wouldn't have got in under today's expectations. Glad I did though and wouldn't change a single thing. _________________ ITMA! |

I shouldn't worry about the Yak Horn.
The buglers branch has been trying to master it for over 300yrs and are still trying.
Tanky Webb was the only one who was any good.
Shame the rest of us weren't. _________________ I used to live life to the full.

It sounds as though you are probably more prepared than many others that will be attending the audition process. Just relax and enjoy the experience, I am sure that you will do well. _________________ Remember! If the enemy are in range, then so are you! |

| Ok, thanks a lot for the advice. I've just been stressing a lot lately about these solos and trying to get as prepared as possible. |

Oxide me young fruit...
Lighten up, and relax sunshine. You seem to be well prepared for the forthcoming audition. If you get yourself all stressed and worried you may blow it. Now that would be a whole lot of wasted preparation.
Aural is either 'you have it or you don't'. An old.. no VERY old tutor of mine used to say.."If you can't sing it you can't play it", but there's such a thing as 'parrot fashion', which has seen a lot of lesser blessed ears through careers, let alone auditions. You'll be fine, and I wish you all the best in your future career. I'm sure the modern day Band Service is looking for just your type of input and effort, so be yourself, and savour every step of the way....
Please don't panic.... _________________ 'Never moon a werewolf'. |
