Hi,
I am currently working towards the DipABRSM on flute (1st instrument). However, I also play the tenor sax and would be interested to know whether the Royal Marines would prefer one to have taken a grade on their 2nd instrument or not? (surely they'd prefer to teach from scratch - no bad habits etc. )
thanks.
Rachael Bull. |

Hi Rachael,
The audition is about potential... they want to see you perform but they are looking for someone with the potential to progress as well. i'll get your question answerd by someone at the school for you. _________________ http://www.royalmarinesbands.co.uk

I had Grade 8 Euphonium and had just finished my degree and done a minor performance module. So they offered me Trombone and Cello! Apart from the odd bit of trombone playing I was a beginer on both. They dont look for peices of paper that say you can play, more that you can play or have the potential to play an instrument.
Any help?!!! _________________ "I'm not fat, this is a well exercised diaphragm!"

Just in, hot off the keyboard!

Really appreciate the feedback from the school of music - thanx alot for finding out for me admin.
I will be visiting my local armed forces office soon to talk more and sort out when i'll be taking various tests (RT etc.). |

I'm due to start in September and already had my grade 8 flute at my audition. I was currently working towards this on alto sax. I'm working on Trinity and Guildhall diploma for flute at the moment but I've been put in to learn violing but carry on with saxophone so you cant really predict what you are most likely to be put on. |

Fizzie, you should know by now what instruments you have been accepted on. Have a look through the paperwork sent to you and that will tell you what you'll be palying... _________________ http://www.royalmarinesbands.co.uk

| Sorry my post was a bit confusing. I was saying that I know I've been put on violin and saxophone even though I've reached a certain level on flute. I just read what I wrote and I confused myself! |

Don't, whatever you do, stop playing the flute. As a Sax player and Violin holder the Flute is the other instrument that can be used in Dance Band or Big Band. _________________ Wine is meant to be drunk............I am drunk.............Therefore am I wine??

I'm never going to stop playing flute! I've been playing it for 12 years and I haven't worked this hard on it to then have to stop.
You're not allowed to play an instrument you're not in on during working hours though are you? I think that's what we were told at the audition. Am I right? |

It's a nice thought Booty, but in reality it's the flute players who transfer to Saxs on Big bands and then cover the flute parts. I think young Fizzie might have their work cut out on the old string thing to be caring too much about flute-ing too much. Just a thought from a pragamtist! _________________ I feel the need - The need for Tweed! |

Oh poo. Does that mean I wont get a chance to play the flute then. I could start my own folk band. There's a plan... |

It depends on wether you use the unsupported lip technique on the Sax. Most Flute players tend to use that technique as it doesn't affect the lip muscles the same way that the more traditional lip over the bottom teeth method does. _________________ Wine is meant to be drunk............I am drunk.............Therefore am I wine??
