YORK SAXOPHONEMy neighbour has appeared with an old York Tenor Sax. which he bought at an auction sale. It's gold laquered and in fairly scruffy condition, but all the keys/pads etc. seem fine. The only markings I can see are YORK (which looks more like Yark) on the front, and a serial no. stamped on the back. Any of you boffins know anything about these..??? What's the latest way/material for cleaning it up..??
Any help much appreciated....

Could that be Vark?
I can PM you the telephone number of an expert instrument cleaner if you like Rab. It will have to be during his working hours. Failing that try emailing him by clicking here.

You are right Rab, I do. I even know how to spell it as well. SAXOPHONE. York saxamaphones are an inferior class of instrument compared to what is around nowadays. The likes of Yanigasawa, Selmer, Yamaha et al, puts the York in the shade. It is basically a school or student model, similar to the Jupiter. Someone previously said it could be a Lark, and they were not far off the mark there either. The Lark is a make of stringed instrument from China of inferior quality, again a student model. Great for children to learn on, but lacks tone and finesse for the more advanced player. I'm sure it applies to almost all instruments where you have different ability levels. Brass instruments have their student and professional models too. Conn, Olds etc are the professional choice, where perhaps B&H are for the good amateur.
So all in all then Rab, York Saxophones are for the student and depending on condition worth about £250 - £400.

Do you know....that really makes me seeth. Why do beginners get all the $hit to play on. They should start as they mean to go on and get a decent instrument. How kids are expected to play on a crap piece of poo always amazes me. I see adverts for crap pianos in the paper that say 'ideal for beginners'. If you want your sprog to sound good on an instrument, afford them the courtesy of providing a decent one. (Oh and i wasnt having a go at you Botty....just one of my pet hates simmering to the surface)

Good point Aaron... .. My parents allowed me to choose my own comb..Unfortunately there wasn't much change left for decent paper though...

Isn`t there a rental scheme running so that you don`t lash out loads of beer tokens on a hooter only to find that your little darling has fallen out with his/her best musician mate and doesn`t want to do that any more?
I think Cockles was doing someting on those lines....but as the man in the surgical boots said......

No offence taken double A. The only reason I can think of having differing qualities of instrument is that youngsters being so fickle, they change their mind like the weather, and to fork out on an instrument that might cost many hundreds of pounds only for the youngster to change their mind and decide on a different instrument is quite an expensive hobby to pursue. I think that a lot of schools provide instruments to either loan or hire, and once a child knows that they are going to stick with it, then perhaps a more expensive one may be purchased. We were quite fortunate in the RMB to have good instruments (even though I'm sure the Horn holders would disagree) Saxamaphones were Selmer and are regarded as one of the better makes. I think Oboes were Howarth and again a good make. I'm not so au fait with the cornets, trumpets Troms etc. but I think Besson was a good make.

Well I'm so glad my neighbour bought that old Sax..I can't give him a great deal of info on how to tidy it up, but I can sure tell him what kind of instrument he should buy for his (grown-up) kids, where to get decent sausages and pork chops, and how to go about taking drama lessons.....
He'll be soooooooooooo chuffed.. And more confused than he was before he fell Heir to the stupid thing in the first place....
Now... Anydoby for a night-cap..???
