Tim Smye-Rumsby RIPWe have just been informed of the untimely death of Tim Smye-Rumsby in Dunfermline.
Tim, who always kept himself fit, passed away some time whilst swimming at Dunfermline swimming pool on Sunday 03 September 2006. A Post Mortem should be carried out soon and funeral details will be posted here as soon as they are confirmed. At the moment Trish, Tim's wife, has asked that any exRMBS attending should take their instruments as she would like a band to play during the service provisionally booked for Saturday 09 September 2006.
A fine SNCO, a gentleman and a great musician... Tim will be missed. Our sincere condolences go to his family and all who knew him.
Rest in peace Tim.

Tragic news indeed, I was talking to him not so long ago.
He was a previous Bandmaster at Faslane and is still fondly remembered by the Band.

A very good friend and tormentee, (Tim Smye-Ringbolt to name but one of my endless quips about and against him), what a fine bloke he was - always with a smile on his face and ready to help.
He travelled 100's 0f miles from Scotland to be with me on my 21st birthday and slept all the way through the fun. He it was that introduced me to John Barry's music by buying me a tape for that same birthday - Trish was there too, sleeping right alongside of him.
I will now always wish I'd made that little extra effort to get back in touch with him, I knew exactly where he was too and sent the occasional message via a third party. You always think there'll be another day...
I am very sad at this news.
All of my sympathy goes out to you Trish in these long tragic days and of course to your children. It's so different missing someone who you know you'll never see again.
Rest in peace Tim, you were a very good friend and companion.

Many happy memories of Tim, in particular from our time at Arbroath. Tim was a bundle of energy, and a regular visitor to my parents' home during our time at Rosyth, where he was never shy to ask for his favourite snack of scrambled eggs.
Rest In Peace my little friend.....

I was in J Wing with Tim, he had joined just before me, and our paths crossed from time to time over the next 20 odd years. The photograph above is how I will always remember him. Smiling.
Thanks for all the laughs, Tim.

Tim Smye RumsbySad news indeed about Tim and in such tragic circumstances, just been congratulating others on reaching a certain age and then this, it makes you realise just how quick these things can happen. I had the pleasure of serving with Tim for a short while in my early days with the Fleet Band at Chatham, before he moved on, a good Fluatist and a real nice guy. My condolences to all the members of his family and to those members that is the family of the RMB.
RIP TIM.

I first met Tim when I was drafted to FOSNI band in 1984. He took care of the new starts and made sure they got involved in every pu going. My best memory was of the time we played tubby the tuba in the carnegie hall. I played tubby and looked like a tuba. Tim played the pic and looked the same size as the pic ! God bless you Tim.

I am deeply sad to hear of the passing of a great friend and musician, Tim Smye-Rumsby.
Tim and I (as well of many other RMB's) had many fantastic times and runs ashore.
His other 'family' the Royal Marines Band Service, will miss a GENTLE MAN, Oh yes! And a good drinking partner.
We served in Chatham Band together in the 70's.
I have many memories accompianing him on Band trips to Ethiopia, Keil etc.
After he left for FOSNI, I met him several times north of the border when I was catching the grey funnel line to some overseas destination.
He took me to his home in Dover and over many visits I got to know his parents, sister and brothers..
A message to Trish.
Tim will be missed by us all.
You are also in ALL our thoughts at this time.
I am sorry I will not be able to make it to his funeral but I will say my goodbyes to him in my own way.
I am proud to say, I knew Tim and was a friend.
Tim, keep a look out for the rest of us in the future and show us around when we meet again.
Rest in Peace.

Tim's funeral. The Church was bursting at the seams and his coffin lay with a flute and shinny white helmit on top. 2 x RM buglers in full ceremonials stood to attention at the main entrance. The service was, as you would expect a sad affair and there was not a dry eye in the house. Afterwards at the Glen Pavilion a band of some 20 musicians, young and old, serving and ex, took to the stage and played music whilst being plied with drinks by Tim's accommodating son (like father like son). It was a marvelous event that went on for hours. Laughing and crying with stories that would make you cringe.
What a loss, what a send off.

So Sorry to hear of Tims Passing, it was thanks to the wee man himself that got me into the Volunteer Band at Neptune and which led to my subsequent employment within the base. He was a brilliant flautist and always pushing me on in my flute practice. He will be remembered by all of us at Faslane very fondly for his wacky ideas and massive enthusism.
Please pass on my conolences to the family, a really nice bloke and talented flautist who will be saddly missed..

Thanks chalkyc for the news of the funeral - it helps to know that he was amongst so many friends who wanted to say goodbye.
I can only imagine some of the stories, wish I could have been there to hear some and tell some others.

Tim-smye RumsbyI've not been on this site for awhile, and was shocked and saddened on discovering the passing away of Tim. He really was a gentleman, friend to all, dedicated family man, excellent musician and personal friend. We first served together in C.T.C band c1974, and in later years F.O.S.N.I. He was an excellent S.N.C.O who had excellent managerial skills and allways gave 100% to the job.
I remember Tim, Taff Lilley and i having consumed a few beers, swimming in a river in Canada c1975 fully clothed. We casually climbed out of the water on passing close to a cafe, only to be lightly reprimanded by the police.( Happy days).

The family have still a business in Dover, just along from the Eastern Docks. I think it's an electrical company now.

It always was a Marine Electrical Business, Tim was very proud of the 3 masts on the cliffs at Dover which he said his father had dealings with. Incidentally, Dave Stonebridge worked there for a while following his discharge.
