1. If you mean join up then it is however many are needed. If you mean pass out, it is however many pass the exams. If we need 5 trombonists in 3 years time then we will recruit 5 this year (training is 3 years) and then they will be passing out readfy to replace the people who are leaving.
2. It depends if you are selected. The bottom line is this: You join the Royal Marines, it is a military organisation. Music is your primary role but if you are needed to fulfil your secondary role anywhere in the world then you will go. Look here to see what people did on operations: http://www.royalmarinesbands.co.uk/pages/DiaryIndex.htm read the diaries.
3. No, you don't need to be grade 8. You need to have potential. If you want to be a bugler (drummer) then you have to have enough ability that when you are auditioned they see that you have the potential to learn and be trained. They don't expect you to be a virtuoso performer before you get here.

Ive been to Iraq, Norway and am due to go to Afghanistan as part of our Military role. Ive stopped thinking of it as a secondary role now to be honest!! But not everybody does these things, Im a volunteer for Afghan and enjoyed the training in Norway. Just lets not talk about Iraq........lol!

Hi Matt - why don't you get yourself down to your nearest careers and find out what being an RMB is all about. When I was in we went to some weired and wonderful places and often did things that were nothing to do with music, but thats life in the RM, no matter what your status is - i.e. Bandsman, Bugler or Commando. Have fun.

Well said Tommo........most of the places we have been to or ended up are now no longer there, although I don't think it was anything to do with what we did there. Or perhaps it was!!!
I have been to places in the world that were not part of any war zone (well not before I went there anyway!!) USA (North & South,) Canada, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, all around Europe and other places that are now a far and distant memory. Only the mental scars still remain!!
What matters most is that you will enjoy yourself with perhaps the best bunch of mates you could ever wish for. You all have the same thing in common. Being a Royal Marine and being proud knowing what you do is second to none. Bite the bullet mate and pop down the careers office.
