Richard WatererSome of you, like me, may have received an e mail from Steve Misson today informing of Richard Waterer passing away after a 'massive heart attack'.
I didn't know him too well at all, but am aware that he commanded a lot of respect.
God rest his soul - another family member lost.
Lights out...

Yes Stuart, he really was a special man. I was fortunate enough to serve with him when he was the Band SNCO on the Ark Royal, as well as DoM at Fleet, (Northolt) and finally as PDM. Nothing would ever fluster the man. He really was the true professional. He will be sadly missed by all that knew him or had cause to meet him. I hope the Band Service can perform a suitable send off for him. Twink Starr (Brian)

Having just returned from the USA myself today and heard this awful news, I just wanted to say how very sad I feel. Dick Waterer was such an important part of my life in the Band Service. Firstly as Section Commander and room mate, fellow trombone-class member and mentor. He was a constant duet partner and someone I always looked up to both as a player, and a person. Because of him we all tried harder to keep up, he set the standards in all he did, he was always absolutlely immaculate, probably the smartest man I ever met and like you have all said so elloquently, a real gentleman and genuinly kind person. Later on, as the Boss of CTC Band, he was just the same, and set a high example in all he did, the word immaculate was invented to describe him. My deepest and sincere sympathy to you Sue.

As did many many others I attended the funeral of Dick Waterer on Thursday. It was all he deserved. The whole ceremony was a credit to the Royal Marines Band Service in honouring one of the best PDM's it has ever had. Later at the reception in the Corps museum Sue and family showed great resilience in attending to meet all the folks who attended the day. My point is... take away the pomp and ceremony and we are left we an absolutely devastatingly premature death of a husband, father and grandfather. I hope Sue can call on us all for support in these often difficult days that follow a sudden death. Its certainly available here.
