Jim Mason

Retired Life

On retiring from the Band Service, I took up a number of social, business and professional contacts around the world. One of these was as a free lance examiner for the Trinity College of Music, London. In this capacity I was priveleged to examine a number of candidates for Performing and Teaching diplomas from the Band Service.

On one memorable occasion, a Band Sergeant arrived from Deal as a candidate for a Teaching Diploma. He backed into the examination room carrying his selected instrument, and on turning to look at the examination board - his first comment was " Jesus Christ, its you!"
At this point I felt that I had to stand up and say "No, actually, the name is Jim Mason" - I then turned to my fellow examiners and said "This candidate is known to me!"

He passed!!

What a brilliant way to put someone at ease with a funny like that
I don't know what is worse for a victim... sorry, Candidate; knowing the examiner and performing below what the examiner knows you can do or, being brilliant and the examiner knowing you hit is lucky

I wonder what your response would have been if he'd said "Good God, it's you!"
