Having just looked through John Ambler's Book "The Royal Marines Band Service" I can only find 2 references to anyone called west:
On the 24th November HMS Dunedin was torpedoed by U-124 in mid-Atlantic. BM Sargeant, BdCpls West and Jones, seven Musicians and a Band Boy were lost. Next day, off Libya, U-331 torpedoed the battleship HMS Barham. Commandant General’s proposal for Band Reductions (1958) Type Commands Type Air (Home) (BM J West) Class B One was lost so it isn't him and Bandmaster West has the wrong initial unless Ramon was his nickname... |

Thanks for that. Ramon's middle name was John so it could be him. What year was the Dunedin torpedoed. Soounds like West was 'lost' in this event or have I misunderstood. | ||

Here's a link to HMS Dunedin website: http://www.hmsdunedin.co.uk/ BDCPL CRM West was one of the casualties MPK, when it was torpedoed in 1941 with the loss of 419 men. This may be of interest: 24th NOVEMBER 2007 REUNION NEWS: ''This year's Day or Remembrance and Reunion on 24th November was a wonderful gathering of members of the Dunedin Society. We were honoured to have among us our five living survivors of the sinking and two veterans who served before Dunedin went down. The combined Remembrance Service and Reunion was held at the Southsea Royal Naval Memorial and the Royal Maritime Club (formerly The Royal Sailors' Home Club), in Portsmouth'' Good to see that there are still some of the old boys around. |

Ramon WestRamon's father was John West so perhaps it was his father on the Dunnedin, Ramon enlisted as a boy bandsman on 10 January 1944, so it was not him.Thanks for the help. |
