Popeye's

It was Mountbatten's Funeral (RIP) and we were formed up on Wellington Barracks parade ground, waiting and having a stand easy, when a squad of Popeye's marched in through the gate and halted, with their fancy drill cravats etc; A certain Bugler stood watching with a cup of tea in hand from the mobile NAAFI wagon. When they had finished and stood at ease, this certain Bugler, in a deep voice started to sing - "There is nothing like a Dame" - instantly, as one, the Popeye's all turned (40 or so) and gave stare's of ice - this certain Bugler ended up as a D/M

Scuse my youthful ignorance, but whats a popeye?!

I'm guessing here...

American sailors?

American in Paris - Gershwin.

There is nothing like a dame, nothing in the world...

To be sung to the hit tune, "There is nothing like a dame"

Am I close?

Right - USN Sailors

We played at a VE Day celebration at Whitehaven last year and all the services, serving and ex, turned up and marched onto the square and sat down. 20 minutes into the service, the USN contingent turns up, in a taxi and just stroll onto the square!! Marvellous!!

attention all Fleet Bandies...... remember the wedding of Prince Andrew to his loyal and devoted wife Fergie!!!!!! The band was formed up just down from Westminster Abbey waiting for the service to end...... The Naval guard commander decided he would take some of his sailors and allow them to stretch their legs by perambulating down in front of the band and back. The Corps of Drums... pi$$ takers all and encouraged by Vance T Griffin started blowing love puffs and kisses at the sailors as they passed. Eventually i was approached officially by the grunting CPO GI ordering me to stop the Buglers blowing kissess at his sailors. I chose to pretend he was not there whilst the boys blew him kisses also. The GI was followed by the guard officer who ignorned me and looked for TED Whealing who was at the back of the band enjoying a glass of Champagne with the clarinets and provided by the cheeky chirpy cockney women who all love a good royal wedding. Duly summoned back to the front of the band Ted informed the guard officer not to be so precious about his boys. The poor chap labout turned with as much dignity as those silly leather gaiters allows and was rewarded with several loud kisses from the Bulgers!!!!! My fault i suppose i broke the cardinal rule of letting the band get bored!!

Horseguards rehearsals at Wellington Barracks one year. Remember That thin strip of grass by the railings close to the main road ? Anyway, most of the lads were stood on it during a break when a Guards Officer all dressed up in his black frock coat went up to the lads and shouted "GET OF MY GRASS". Bglr 'Bomber' Mills happened to be close by with myself and Pecussionist Les Wilson in ear shot, when bomber said " WHO THE F**K ARE YOU TALKING TO". He screamed back" I'M THE ADJUDANT".
Bomber realising his fopar just said to the lads, " okay lads you heard him, get off the grass" ( ouch!!! )
