Hello there!Hi,javascript:emoticon('') I play the trombone in my local town silver band and I was wondering what standard of musician I had to be if I ever wanted a good chance of being excepted into her royal majesty's band of the royal marines.
I know that its a question that I have no doubt you've heard before but I would really appreciate an answer. Please.
PS would I be asked to play another instrament?

He plays a brass instrument that has (sometimes) no valves, so he's half way there Rab.

On a more serious note Gaskell. Visit the RMBS website and it will give you all the info you require. failing that spend some time at your local Navy Careers office and they will furnish you with all the info needed, you may even be able to speak to someone who has served with the RMBS depending on which office you visit.
The Trombone is still a single category instrument, as it is used in all musical combinations that the RMBS undertake. Best of luck with your endeavours.

Whereabouts are you from and which band do you play in? When you go for audition they look more for potential to train you as much as musical abilities that you may already have.
Check out the website for moree details but also make sure your fit!! Be able to run 3 mile in about 25 minutes and the rest of it will fall into place!!
Any questions feel free to pm me cos Im currently a bone player in the band!

CheersThanks again you guys!
Mind you I can't help but think that they'll rope me in for combat and ship me off to the navy or something before I can say "hi I play the trombone, can I play in the Royal Marines?" (' ')

But no, seriously. Are we talking A-level standard or just the ability to show that we can be taught?

I would suggest that you need grades, probably to at least grade 5 (I may be wrong but someone will correct me if I am). You need to demonstrate a good knowledge of music theory, an ability to demonstrate aural perception, interview technique and you will be put through a series of fitness tests (this is all once you have passed an initial interview at the careers office and the tests at the careers office).
As has been said before, look at the RMBS website and find the section on how to join up it'll be really helpful!
