On the J/Buglers (Barham House, House S/NCO Sgt. Tony Ormond-Dobbin) new entry intake of 5th September 1967 I joined up with the likes of Malcolm (Tommo) Thompson, Barry Stokes, Steve (Tits) Pearce, Arther (Jock) Yorkstone, Mick (Spike) Hughes, Ginge Edmunson, Malcolm (Paddy) Paterson to name but a few (memory escapes me for the rest, I think there were 19 J/Bugs in total) after doing the section Commanders Course in the July of '68' (see Bob Taylors album in Dickie Valentines site) I was Section commander of Michael Smith-Thompson's new entry room. Malcolm (Tommo) Thompson became Tommo1 and Michael became Tommo2 but I think the numbers came later after the completion of training on the Staff band side, I was already on Draft to Chatham with Jock Yorkstone - Tommo2 maybe able to shed more light - and thats it from me

Well!! Well!!! Well!!!
Let me clear up the confusion for one and all.
Me (Michael Smith-Thompson -Tommo 2) joined J/Wing in 1968 in the days of Barham House and Len (Nutty) Edwards. Malcolm Thomas was the section commander in my room, but the number thing happended at Eastney when there were two of us M.S.Thompson Malcolm RM25698 (Tommo 1)and Michael RM26593 (myself Tommo 2). From my best memory, which is hard to confirm at my age, I served with a huge Corps of Drums with Chris Preston, Ginge Mansbridge, Geordie Rowell (2 cod row chips and scraps was a regular order from Fred Monks Chippy), Spud Murphy, Pete Law, Al Piner, Tits Pierce, Sammy Sandle, George Castle (Bugle Major) Dave Hubbold and now I'm starting to fail in memory. this was back in 1970
I may have left a couple out so I'm sorry if I did.
I left the RMB in 1980 post an audition to change to the musician branch of which I past, but decided to leave for the antipodes. This was followed by a 19 year career in the RAAF Central Band in Melbourne.
I am now 7 years away from military music and enjoying community music where I have furthered my playing abillities and have been promoted to a Tuba section on BBb. As per our web site I am also enjoying the position of Music Director of Monash Concert Band. www.monashconcertband.org.au
I is, however, great to be in contact with so many of my old chums from the best days in my military career, through this and other mediums. Thanks!!! Tommo 2

On Sunday the 17th December Monash Concert Band combind with Oakleigh City Brass to form the 2006 City of Monash, Carols by Candlelight Band. I had a 75 piece band on stage with a 20 piece choir. Along with various soloists and festive acts, we entertained an audience of local, and not so local residents estimated at approxmately 22,000.
It never ceases to amaze me that so many people make this anual pilgramage to Melbourne's second biggest Carol's by Candlelight. When the sun goes down and the people light their candles it is an awsome sight.
I have been organizing this show now for the past three years and it is a very proud position to be in when you are the Director of Music for such a wonderful family event.
Photo's will be posted on our web site in the near future. www.monashconcertband.org.au
To all ex and serving members of the RMB's, I hope you all have a safe and wonderful festive season.

Afternoon at the Proms

G'Day All from Downunder.
Monash Concert Band combined with the RAN Band Melbourne put forward a magnificent concert on the November 11th 2007. Yes, Remembrance Day.
Our program consisted of music from von Supee, Holst, Alford, Mike McDermott, Tommo, and Elgar. The second half of our program was dedicated as a Festival of Remembrance to the fallen which included Sunset, Last Post and a Pipers Lamet.

My daughter, Emma, recited the poem 'Do Not Stand at my Grave And Weep' which created the right emotion for the finale of the concert.

We had an audience of about 900 in a house that seats 1200, not bad!!!!

One ex RMB, Ian Ashton, would have been playing as he is a member of the RAN but he had sprained his neck. (Massed Bands Neck). It would have been great for him to have been there as I was intending to get a photo, maybe he guessed that and became camera shy.

The gig went very well and I look forward to being able to give any visiting RMB's to Melbourne a seat in the band or free tickets for our concert.

Next gig for Monash Concert Band is, how quick this comes around, Carols by Candlelight, where we usually get an audience of about 22,000

Tommo (2)
