Melbourne firesHi jkjazzy alias John Meir ex RMB 3696- long gone from the RMB (1958-68).
Had an email from Ray Alberry ( HMS Hermes mate) concerned re the fires as I live close to Melbourne. Just letting everyone know that as far as I am aware, no ex RMB's were affected by the horrendous fires and the consequences of them.
Hope that some of you have your bags packed again for the Adelaide reunion not far away now!

Fire ended up about 500 meters from my drum, we struck lucky when the wind turned.
I arrived home from work to find the sister-in-law and her boys at my place. They had abandoned their home as the fire was quite close to them.
The sad part of all this is the shocking loss of life, brought home to me, personally, when I realized that my ex boss of the RAAF Central Band, Graeme Lloyd, was in Canberra and his son, Greg, was minding Graeme's house for the weekend. Greg was with his girlfriend and her brother. Sadly all three perished in the fire. My thoughts are with them at this stage that they are going through. I remember Greg when he was a young lad who, sometimes came with us on the bus to gigs and always had fun when we performed at carols each year.
Bless them all

Its been a sombre time here at the Army Band Sydney due to the sad loss of Graeme's son and his friends, the fires have affected so many people. My wife (army nurse) was mobilised to Victoria, but hopefully should be home sometime soon. Glad you guys and your families kept safe.

We had another close shave yesterday. Fires started in the proximity of Emma's school. The school was evacuated while kids were still able to get out of the area, of course Emma decided that she go to her mates in Belgrave, just where the thick of another fire was. You goota love your kids. It was hard to get in touch with the her but finally Sue managed to get hold of and got her home safe.
this years fires have certainly been a wake up call for many.

Any news on getting the people that started some of those fires Tommo?

I believe that they have already arrested a couple of people. Both have been charged and await their conviction and sentence. I far as I'm concerned they should be put in the middle of one of their fires and feel what the people that died did. I'm not a big believer of paying so much per year to keep them in jail and alive.

Put them in a room, with some of Oz's nastier wildlife.

A very, very restrained answer, Tommo. I'm sure many of us feel the same.

Looks like they have found someone in Western Australia who started the fires in Marysville. That place was completely flattened and about 43 people lost their lives.
Monash Concert Band will be giving the takings from our June 7th Showcase to one of the bands that lost all their equipment during the fires.
