Joe "Algie" Guest

I had an email from Steve Misson to say that Joe sadly passed away on Monday morning.

I really enjoyed working with him for the seven years I had in the instrument store. Nothing I asked him to do was too much trouble and he helped me out on many occasions whether it was fixing my trombone or the plumbing at home.

Pete Worsfold kept a fatherly eye on him over the last few years and brought him along to a BBQ we held at home last May. Unfortunately, the last time I saw him.

RIP Joe, you'll be sadly missed.

In Honoured Memory.

RIP 'Algie'

I met Joe over 50 years ago. In all that time, nothing was too much trouble if you needed a hand or a hooter fixed.

RIP Joe my friend, it was a pleasure to know and serve with you.

Lofty.

Along with many, many others, I only have good memories of this happy chappy.

He had to do a lot with my poor horns after I'd already had a go at 'fixing' them. What a nice guy he was.

RIP Joe

Sad news...
Nick B

I am so sad to hear of Joes Death. He was always helpful in the Instrument repair shop, and made up part of a great team.  I was never sure of His official instrument category, as He seemed to play them all!! Occasionaly, I would see Him in the Bowling Green Tavern and He would often love to spin a dit. Sadly over the last few years His memory failed Him. RIP Joe, another  member of our Family passed to the great Massed Bands above. Condolences to all His Family

Joe was also known as an Artisan of Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club.

As an instructor I spent a few afternoons in the Repair Shop in East Barracks getting bits n bobs for the class. Joe was always in there beavering away. I always liked the photo he had showing a before and after sequence of an almost flattened brass instrument. He could work magic in that workshop.

Joe helped me out on more than one ocassion when I went to him with a bent hooter!! Nothing was ever too much trouble for him and he had more dits than you could shake a stick at. Another sad loss to our family. RIP Joe and and condolences to your nearest and dearest.

I first met Joe over 50 years ago, always very helpful to all. What a great footballer he was also I think he was one of only a few members of the band service to play for the Corps, I had the pleasure of playing alongside in the Depot team in the early 60s, my sincere condolences to his family and friends that remain in Deal, and to all those left in and out of the RMB that had the pleasure of knowing ALGIE.

So sorry to hear the news of Algie. We go back a long way - to the Isle of Man, where he was in the squad before me. A great character and one of the old school. He will be sadly missed by many.

I have just returned from Jo's funeral and you will pleased to hear it was very well attended and there was standing room only upstairs by the time we all squeezed in.

A simple and moving ceremony with a nice eulogy read by Bob [Jo's son] and Nicola [Grandaughter]  Pasty did the bugling and did a grand job. There are lots of pictures and press cuttings of Jo detailing his career prioe to being the 'instrument repair man'  We all have our charachters we remember during out period of service but it seems Jo was certainly one of those charachters during his time and a great footballer to boot by all accounts.  There is now a wake at the RMA which i am returning to now i have dumped the car.

Now we now all move up the seniorty list one more place but it is not a seniority we applied to be on!
