In Memory - HMS Asphodel

09th March 1944.

On the 09th March 1944, the following members of the Royal Marines Band Service gave their lives while serving onboard HMS Asphodel.

Musician B.W. Denness.

I have posted below, the circumstances of that day.

HMS Ashpodel was a Flower Class Corvette built by George Brown & Co. Kincaid (Greenock, Scotland).
Laid down 20th October 1939, and launched 25th May 1940.
Commissioned 11th September 1940

While travelling on convoy protection for the combined conveys of SL-150 and MKS-41, she was torpedoed and sunk by the German U-Boat U575 off Cape Finnisterre.

Of a ships compliment of 97, there were only 5 survivors who were picked up by the HMS Clover (another Corvette).

I have looked at the Roll of Honour and there was only 1 RMB fatality and as there were only 5 survivors, it seems a bit of a mystery as to why Musn. Denness was on board.
At this time, I am unable to to find out why this was.

Perhaps someone out there knows………….

To those named above and the ships company who also died…..R.I.P.
