Henry MonaghanDoes anyone know of the whereabouts of Ex-BDCPL Henry Monaghan?
Last known of in the Northants area, possibly Raunds.
Fine guitarist and singer but an undescribable tone on the cornet!
He did Al Jolson at the MFM Concerts many years ago.
(He also did Al Jolson at Colston Hall Bristol and had the audience eating out of the palm of his hand......until he told them the Stevie Wonder joke!)

I've been scouring Ancestry.co.uk and found out a bit about Henry.
He was born in 1946, so he is now aged 60. His surname is spelt MONAGHAN and his mother's maiden name was RUDD.
Without being morbid, he is not registered in the deaths, up to 2004, so let's keep our fingers crossed and hope that he is still out there somewhere.
Any information would be gratefully received.

Further to my posting above, I have found a Henry Monaghan on the Electoral Roll for Wellingborough for 2004 and 2005, so things are looking up.

I had the honour of being Henry's make up artist for the aforementioned gigs. I can still picture him shuffling down the "H" Block corridoor at Stonehouse with his dhobi bucket and scrubbing brush. He would return 30 minutes later looking like an already red lobster that had fell asleep in the sun having scrubbed himself from head to toe!
I also recall his inovative method off preparing himself hot meals in his kettle.
He came in to our grot one day in tears, informing us that HMS Hood had sunk! He had just been watching his video of "Sink the Bismark" for the umpteenth time whilst downing a bottle of "Ponti".
Likewise, you could walk past his grot in the early hours after a run ashore and hear the sound of Steam Trains coming from within. All part of Henry's collection of recordings that he had made over the years. He could even identify the bloody train just by the sound of the engine!
It would be fantastic to track him down Billy. If we ever do. I think an "H Block Sweats" reunion would be the order of the day.
I am sure that if such a reunion were ever to come to fruition, there would be a hell of a response from all who knew the legend that is Henry!
Lets hope we can track him down and not let the trail go cold.

greetings men it was nice to know someone remembers stanley bugler. just to clarify maltese screech . a local wine made in malta good quality cost 1 shilling the rough stuff 3d a bottle if you knew were to get it. I used to drink the rough stuff with Eddy Gasser,Henry monagan & stoker Ted Deeprose our drummer & manager. Henry & myself shared a love of Fender guitars, model trains (Hornby dublo) & History particularly 20 century (WW2 era) I also ended up as a session player ,bass guitar & string bass thanks to Henry's interest and help. I remember Titch the bugler good to know we are still alive & kicking. stanley bugler

My recollections of Stanley Bugles, is of a third party nature. From more elderly statesmen who would say that Stanley Bugles would always count himself in to a Bugle Call by stamping his foot on the ground to get the tempo etc etc... Is this true Stanley? Cheers mate....Booty.

Henry used to cook a curry by boiling the tins (curry & rice) in his kettle!
The 'Booties' called him Cpl Bucket, as he would be seen in the corridors of Stonehouse accom, on his way to the bath with a bar of Lux/Camay + model ships. He'd carry his dhobi in the bucket and on his return trip to his grot, all you could see was a lobster (ie. Henry after he had scrubbed himself red-raw in the bath!)
Excellent guitarist, terrific singer, but a naff tone on the cornet!

Stanley..You old PDM of reprobates... How could we ever forget you mate..???. I was "fortunate" enough to be in the next bedspace to you in the Pembroke attics circa 1969/70..This meant I was the first to receive the early warning signals when you were carrying out your little "experiments"...
Do you remember when we formed a little heavy rock band called "The Black Chew Lips"..?? ..Your idea mate not ours..
And of course your famous "entries" into any packed pub or hall which was unlucky enough to have swinging doors...???
Great to hear from you again matey..Now come on.. You HAVE got dits to spin....
After all that I bet you don't even remember me....

Henry told us the story of Dip Hillman, who after his 'Tot of rum' and many others, was rather annoyed when he was trying to get a bit of afternoon shut-eye (In bed, or out of barracks we used to say!)
Henry had his record player on full-pelt and into the room entered an angry Dip, poker in hand. He ripped the plug out of the wall by its lead, smashed the plug into a hundred pieces and waved the remains in front of Henry saying...'' Now play the b'stard!''

This old fart can remember Dip Hillman, he was a very nice guy so please be a liitle respectful he certainly was not a dipstick. Dip was a Solo Clarinet player I think, he may have been on the violin as well. But I dont know anything about the old fella he sees to have disappeared, I know that Mike Jones has been searching for him for ages to no avail. I am not spitting my dummy out but a little respect lads if you didnt know the guy dont dis him.

Let's rewind here.........
I said: 'Did anyone come across Dip Hillman?'
Botty said: 'He was a bit of a Minx' (Ha Ha!)
I said: 'Dip Minx....I don't get it?'
Botty said: 'Dipstick'
Therefore....(wait for it, wait for it!)
He was calling me a Dipstick....
And that concludes the case for the defence m'lud!

I, too, have fond memories of Henry, spinning yarns to us younger inliers up at the Stonehouse Vaults. He was amusing to sit with in the galley for mealtimes as well. And no-one who ever saw the lobster returning from his bath-times will ever erase the sight from their minds.
