Help With Drum Cadences & much much more...G'day all!
A big hello from Australia et cetera et cetera... I'll cut to the chase so to speak...
My name is Ben Hibbard, and I'm head of the drum corps of the NSW Ambulance Band. I'm looking to draw on the RM drum cadences as a reference for what our corps should be playing. Is there any chance I can get my hands on a copy of the official ( ) Royal Marines Drum cadences (sequences? I don't know what they're supposed to be called...)? Preferably in a PDF format would be good.. or a point in the direction of a book I can buy!
Now, in another question, How do the RM side drummers keep their drums in check whilst marching? Is there some kind of strap that connects the drum to the leg? We currently have a side drummer who's drum likes to roll off her leg either to the outside or inside... I've noted from YouTube that RM drummers do not suffer from this problem!
Any help appreciated!
Cheers,
Ben H.

Welcome Along Aussie Drummer.........I have it on good authority that our Bulgers(Drummerers) are so tough, they have a patch of velcro stapled to their thigh, the converse part of the velcro is attached to the drum, hence it stays in position perfecty! Some are even so tough thay have dispensed with the drum sling and rely on the velcro alone!!! Now thats RM Bulgers for you!

Some drummers have such hairy legs (and some of the blokes) they don't need the opposing bit of velcro.
By the way AD are your hats as difficult to shape as an RM Bert?

geez,
Nice straight answers.... pfffft! Just to be clear, I'm in the NSW Ambulance Band, as in the guys you call when you break your leg... So I dunno about the army slouch hats. But I'm pretty certain they are a cinch to shape. You just pin one side up!
On to the drums, I see from footage on YouTube that there is some kind of white strip down the leg that wraps around, but isn't that just do protect the leg from the drum? Also, I have yet another question to add to my lengthy list. The ropes that dangle from the bottom of the drum. How are they attached to the drum? NSW Ambulance have Premier drums which look much the same as the RM ones (without the big decal... we just have the Ambo patch!) But our ropes have been 'attached' under the lug before it presses onto the rim. This makes it kinda hard to tune the bottom head as those 4 lugs are pressing onto softish rope instead of the rim. (If that makes no sense, I can take a few piccies and post em up here.)
I'm still really really interested in the RM drum solos! As usual all the footage I get off YouTube fades out before any solos can be notated!
Cheers lads,
Ben

Do you want marching solos or drum statics. Most of them are copyrighted to individuals and some are published through some publishing companies.
The leg guard is correct, the lads were jesting (and we'd nail them to our legs rather than velcro them).
The traces (ropes that dangle) are attached around the tension rods...

I'm not very cluey on the difference between statics and solos. What I'm talking about is the 'solos' that the drum corps play between tunes, as in whilst the band are changing music on a march... perhaps 'Black Cat' rings a bell? Is there any standards or such??
And back to the drum mounting, if the white strip is to protect the leg, how do you stop the drum from rolling off the leg?
Cheers,
Ben

Marching solos it is then, I'll see what I can do for you.

The drum hangs from a carriage hook onto the leg. We play it as it hangs and if it rolls, we knock it back into place with the thigh. Drum braces/brackets/leg braces are not our style, they are Scottish or drum corps.

Thanks heaps mate. I'm attempting to model our corps on the Royal Marines, as much as one can with an amateur corps. Our drum major is ex-RAN band, but the RAN solos are as boring as bat-$hit!

Ok ok ok ok....
I get the feeling you lads are more interested in silly posts than actually helping me out. Someone PLEASE give me a straight answer on the following:
Are the drums solos that the drum corps play whilst the rest of the band change their music on a march 'traditional'? (like 'black cat') Or attributed to a specific (alive) composer. In Australia, these 'solo's' are no more than 8 bars long and very simple. (I'm NOT talking about 20 minute long complicated pieces for drum corps.)
IF these simple 8 bar solos are written out and then paid for by the RM. Can someone PLEEEEEAAASE at least give the names of some of these composers so I can chat to them!!!!
If these simple 8 bar solos are traditional and handed down from generation to generation, then can someone PLEEEEAAAAASE tell me more!!!!
here's hoping...
