Hello

hi i've just registered. i'm a student in the Portmouth area and i'd like to join the RMBS in a few years time.  i play in 2 local brass bands and i'm working on grade 6 cornet.

Hi getzonica, and welcome to the Forum. Stick in with your cornet playing and if you really want to become a member of RMBS you'll find plenty of good advice in here from past and serving members. Don't be scared to ask any relevant questions, but be prepared for some witty answers. One huge attribute to becoming one of 'the family' is a wicked sense of humour.

would it be usefull learning another instrument? i used to play the piano - got up to grade 1 and gave up after learning for about 5 years and getting no where!

Piano and Cornet is a good combination for the RMBS.

If you have let your piano playing lapse, I suggest you take it up again. If you wish to play the Cornet in the RMBS, the other options in addition to Cornet and Piano are; Cornet and Violin or Solo Cornet.

I've had time to think about your potential Get, and you may possibly already possess most of the requirements to be a quality Bulger. (Bugler)

Grade 6 cornet would make you a virtuoso on the bulge (bugle)..

Grade 1 piano gives you knowledge of more than 5 notes, which would actually get you a gig at the Bulgers' Reunions, as they would only recognise the 5...

And the fact you're a student MAY..MIGHT..PERHAPS POSSIBLY... (cancel the lawyer) mean you've been an expert on rolls and skins?   for some time....

Once you're in they would teach you all the rest of the bad habits to fully qualify you...

Don't worry Miss Getz you're safe in here.

We all like a bit of a laugh and if you really want to join the RMBS, it's something you have to get used to!!!

Keep visiting and posting and I hope you get what you want out of it all, whether it's advice, to learn a bit or just to join in the fun.

  I think I can get used to that the MD in 1 of the bands i play in is a marine and we've heard many stories

i should hope that grade 5 trumpet means i have a knowlegde of more than 5 notes!!
