Hello from CanadaHi all,
My name is David. I am the former principle oboe and english horn (cor anglais as you would call it) of the Stadacona Band of Maritime Forces Atlantic in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. I had the opportunity to play with some Royal Marines at the 50th anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic. What a good group of people!
I hope to come to England sometime and visit although I have no idea where would be the best place to go to run into the RMs, perhaps Portsmouth since there is a band and the school there.
I still play in a Canadian semi-professional orchestra and do freelance work, although mostly on cor anglais.
I wish you all the best. Have fun at the Mountbatten Festival. Wish I could be there to hear it. And keep an extra oboe chair warm in the rehearsal hall and a beer cold for me in the pub in case I ever get myself over there.
Cheers,
David

Hi David and welcome to our friendly site. As far as using the word English Horn for the instrument you play I think it is most acceptable, however there are one or two Cor Francais people on this forum that might disagree. I'm pleased that you're still keeping your hand in and we would definitely keep a cool beer and a warm seat for you in Portsmouth, or Plymouth, or Dartmouth, or Lympestone, or Rosyth, or anywhere for that matter. Keep posting matey.......

Welcome Oboedave.....
Oh Canada! Fantastic memories of the Sky Dome in Torronto. We did 10 days there in 1993 with the USMC band from Parris Island and several units from Canada itself.
Enjoy the forum and post often.

Hi OboeDave!
It's good to see a new face in here, some of the old ones are getting a bit uppity e.g.

See he is a little naive in thinking that Oboeists have to keep their hands in... that's us horninsts job!
He's right about one thing though (which is rare) you are very welcome here and I'm sure you'll get a warm reception for any future postings you wish to make.
As the man said, keep 'em coming!!

Speaking of Toronto..who was there in 1976 for the CNE? Both my wife and I were there with the US BICENTENNIAL BAND. She as a performer and me as a Band Aide" as I was along to celebrate our Honeymoon...paid in full by both US & Canadian Govts. LOL

My wife Barbara was the Asst Principal Oboist with the Bicentennial Band at the time. I was actually between enlistments when we got married. As with most military bands...we were "fair game" when it came to our Honeymoon. We were given a room between the PDM for the band and the Naval Detachment CO. Our room had two twin beds and a cot. We still have not figured out why the cot...LOL.

Never been to Toronto, but have been to both St John and St Johns. That was where Paddy Hughes met and later married the lovely Robin. I was Principal Alto Sax player with the Ark Royal band at the time, although we were there on the Hermes.
Our rooms could sleep 18 children with room in the loft space for the occasional officer or senior rate that was hiding from the Regulators when we were raided!! (See Colin Brown or Carl Westlake).
My best mate Phil (Gilly) Gilbert was the Principal Tenor Sax player and could do a mean Pink Panther. In fact he made a lot of cocktails on board.
Oh happy daze.
