drum sticks

Hi. I am a member of my local marching band and we are trying to improve our marching discipline. Does anyone know the rudiments of lifting sticks. On the left foot should my right or left stick be raised etc.

as you place your left foot down your right stick should be down and when your right foot goes down your left stick comes down,

watch some videos of the royal marines marching

If you watch Royal Marines Bands there is consistency, we all do it the same (the correct way    ) and the others are the ones who get it wrong

He must have been watching the 'Devon and Doughnuts', or that lot from the Royal Anglican Windows outfit!

ALAS, no more Devon and Doughnuts, they have merged with the Gloucesters, Berkshire and Wiltshire Regiment to become the 1st Battalion. The Rifles. with the Light Infantry and Royal Green Jackets also part of the super Regiment.

Perhaps you have been watching poor quality video's where the music seems to be out of sync to the visual actions.
All the R.M. drummers are trained to perform marches in exactly the same way.The sticks pass each other so that the right stick comes down to be over the drum as the left leg hits the ground.at that same moment the left stick has come up to be horizontal with the tip touching the upper lip. This applies whether you are playing 'on' or 'off' beat rhythms.
If it is not on the march and the buglers are performing some modern drum parts then various tempo's may be used in the stickwork.

As Uncle Errol says... videos are often out of synchronisation with the actual footage.
