Drum Major Dave BuchananI am sorry to have to report that Dave has finally passed away. He died on the 2nd October 2008 at 5pm. Dave has fought the battle with cancer as well as could and always with good humour. When I rang him. Dave always greeted me his own "Hello Sunshine how are you"...despite his own pain and suffering. Dave was a Royal Marine from top to toe and inside out.
RIP Dave you were one of the best.

Served under him when he was Corps Drum Major and alongside him when he was in the Dover Harbour Board Police.
Knew him both times as a witty and kind man.
My deepest sympathies got to his close ones and especially Yvonne.
The great massed band in the sky, grows by one more..........
Dave Buchanan.............R.I.P.

I only heard about Dave's professional and benevolent attitude from others and often wondered whether I'd have sorely tested both.
Probably not!
Another family member passes to swell the ranks of the celestial band of brothers...
Rest in Peace Dave and my sincere condolences to your broken hearted family.

First knew Dave when he was Boy's Wing Drum Major. Bumped into him, like the rest of us from time to time, until he retired. His patience was sorely tested by my M1's Course and our attempts at Band Drill but he made the Company Admin studies easy.
Good bloke.........................Doncaster schools tour J Wing Band end of the 60s. Anyone?

Sad news, Dave was an inspiration to many! The smartest bloke in NATO, one of life's TRUE gentlemen and every inch of him a Royal Marine.

I was very saddened to hear that Dave Buchanan passed away after a brave fight with his illness. It was always a pleasure at the channel tunnel when Dave would pop in for a coffee on a quiet night shift and talk about the good old days. He retained that sharp wit that he had in the Corps and was always as smart. My sincere sympathy to Yvonne and his family. RIP Dave.

Dave BucananArrived at the Hospise in Ashford last night at 7pm and got a call from Yvonne to say that Dave had sadly passed away at 5pm Teresa and I were very sad that we did not get to say goodbye.
We had been to visit a few weeks ago and although very frail and in pain made us very welcome and only as Dave could relaid to us some of his many stories of time spent in the Corps.
I had the pleasure of serving with him when he was CDM at Deal and as well as his excellent man managment and administrational skills he was as far as I was concerned the smartest Drum Major to don a 'Lion Taimers' suit.
Much later I worked for him in Folkestone when he had the tittle of 'UK Terminal Security Manager Eurotunnel' all the lads and ladies there called him 'Uncle Buck' and would jump from their seats to look busy when they knew he was about. He used to call them all his 'Kids'.
Dave was one of lifes great characters and will be sadly missed by all that knew him. Deepest condolences go out to Yvonne and his family.
Rest in Peace old friend.

Just been told of the passing away of "Uncle Buck" by his son Steve who works with us at Eurotunnel.
He will be missed by everyone who new him for his great sence of humor.
And as Malc said the smartest man to don the lion tamers outfit.

A great character, who was a great example to the band service and the branch.
Dave was a L/Cpl instructor when I joined and was always larger than life then and through the many years I knew him. We became great friends when I was I/C Corps of Drums at the RMSM. To his honour I wrote Tara'bewky when he retired.
That sentiment holds deeper feelings now.
Condolences to Eyvone,David,Steve and the family.
RIP Dave.

Its a sad day to hear of the passing of Dave Buchanan possibly the smartest looking Drum Major I ever had the pleasure of serving with in the FOSNI Band. Always treated people like human beings and helped you out when you asked him. My condolences to his family.

I served with Dave several times but will always remember him for the times we spent at the annual Sergeants Mess Pantomimes in Deal doing the backstage work.
Great guy and professional in everything he did.

Anyone that had the pleasure and privilege of having served with Dave Buchanan must be mourning the loss of such a great man. Not only was he exceptionally smart, but he was also a true gentleman in the way in which he dealt with all matters relating to his subordinates. He will be sorely missed. Rest in peace Sir.

Sad to hear of the passing of a true gent, what a great guy, did his job to the letter, after that it was all over Dave was Dave at his very best, always very socialable and a good word for everyone.Never served with him but met him many times on massed band gigs. They always say smart as the Guards,Dave was smarter he always looked the part as he should, as someone else has said elsewhere Corps pi$$ed or what and deep down we probably all were at sometime. My sincere condolences to all of his family and members of his greater family the RMB. Another good man and another D/M passed over to the great and good Band Service in the sky.
DAVE BUCHANAN RIP. You will be missed.

The Good Guys go firstHaving left the School of music in 1978 I was awaiting a medical discharge and no-one knew where to put me as I was not well enough for a draft to Dartmouth Band. So Capt Sharpe suggested I worked with Drum major Buchanan in the Band Office. I ended up dong this for about 18 months between hospital appointments. Dave was the best and a great support to me while my medical discharge was being sorted out.
I last saw him 30 years ago but have never forgotten the many stories he told drawn from his vast experience. A good friend to many and a fantastic ambassador for the Band Service.
God grant him rest and Yvonne and the family peace. The measure of the guy will be seen in the extent he will be missed.

It was a sad day to hear the news that Dave had lost his battle with the big C. It has been a privilege to have known him, worked and been trained by him on my Drum Majors Course, and to have been able to call him a friend.
My deepest condolences to Yvonne and family.
We'll meet again some day in the countermarch.

Gutted by the sad news of the passing of one of the finest SNCO's I had the pleasure of knowing, serving and socialising with, during his first DM draft. Dave had the perfect blend of being in charge without aggression, and I only ever remember him shouting when he was in front of the Band giving orders. He used to stroll through the ranks making us all feel better in times of difficulty, and I really can't praise the man highly enough.
Rest In Peace Dave..
Fondest memories mate.

Just in from Dave's Widow Yvonne:
Hi All, hope you are all well.
This is to let you know that as Dave requested, his ashes will be placed in the garden of remembrance at The Royal Marines Museum in Portsmouth on Saturday 17th October 2009 at 1300 hrs.
Following a short service Sandwiches, tea and coffee will be provided afterwards. The Bench donated by Royal Marines Donations will be dedicated to Dave at the same time.
Anyone wishing to attend will be more than welcome.
I find it very hard to believe that in three weeks time Dave will have been gone a year, your support over this time has been invaluable and I thank you all.
Maybe see you 17th October.
Warm regards Yvonne

Great that this is being done, just a pity iy could not have been done a week earlier when the Reunion is on, I am sure many would have vacated the various bars to pay their last respects to a true gent. However it is not to be, wish I could be there , I hope the weather is kind for you all on what I am sure will be a moving occasion. My thoughts will be with you.

Another nice bloke passes on. Smart as a whip, and got the work done without resorting to being Mr nasty B****** that certain DM's did.
Raise a glass to you Dave, RIP mate.
