I only spoke to his wife a couple weeks ago whilst at the concert in Deal where she told me of his condition and now he has left us to join the great and good massed band elswhere. My most sincere condolences to his wife and all other members of his family, and to those who knew and had the pleasure to serve with Bob in the great family that is the RMB, I will miss him as I am sure many others will.

I first knew Bob when he was an instructor, and served with him again with FOF3 band where he was the B/M. A fine man and great musician, he also possessed a wicked sense of humour.
I extend my deepest sympathies to his family, another sad loss to us all.
RIP Bob.

Sad news. Bob was the CSM in Trg Wing when I got promoted to Sgt. He sold me a mess jacket which i duly sold some years later for the same price. I could fit in the jacket, but not his musical boots.
RIP Bob.

Indeed we did have a french horn player. Bob ask John Payne if he would if he would like to learn and play french horn, so John said ok and he did a good job at it, hope to see him and big Mick B at the reunion in Oct.

On board the Centaur in the early 60's we had 2 horn players. Alan Brown RIP and Granny Grant (the mouth from Louth). we also had 2 percussionists, Bill Pugh & musn Wilson. .
We also had BSGT "Jigs" Lipple, oboe. How's that for a screwed up ship's band?

Nice old boy.

I am getting edgy about coming on this forum. Every time I am away for a while, another old oppo passes on. Bob "spud" for my cornet instructor in the wing, and a nice bloke you could not ask to meet, except maybe my other instructor, John Ware for Piano. RIP BoB. Will lift a glass to you.

Well done to Billy Walker for an excellent performance of Last Post and Reveille at Bob Baker's funeral.
There was a full church of family and friends to say farewell to Bob. I'm sure he would have been very proud.

RIP Bob - another of the great and good gone, leaving us reprobates in charge of the bar.
Billy, did you do it on the F or Bb side???

Not wishing to make light of TS's part in the proceedings, why did a former Bandmaster, not have a serving RM Bugler play at his funeral ?
|
Dan A
|
I dont think it matters Mac....Bob was a top man....it would have been difficult to get a Bugler who knew Bob...and having Billy play Last Post added a personal touch to the ceremony.....
|
Wee Mac
|
Yes Dan, I agree !
I was just having a moan, about how difficult it seems to be, to get the sevices of a Bugler ?
Maybe it was just a family, or Bob's choice !

As the branch is becoming increasingly smaller it is becoming more and more difficult I'm afraid. It might only be one bugler but it is 11% of the Corps of Drums in some cases...
|
Wee Mac
|
Oh well,.......in that case, when I depart for the Big Practice room in the sky, I'd better have me bugle with me !

Just as well there's Bugler Grundig.
