Blimey - what's he want here ??

Good Morning All RM's.

You will wonder WTF a Para is doing on your site - no worries,as I was a TA Para, and secondly, looking for an old mucker EX-RM - Bandsman,Trumpeter/Bugler/Yachtie - all round good bloke, and my mate.

We were in a scrape or so together, but always blew it,by laughing...

Why here - and now?

Because of Lance Corporal Ford, RM.,and the gallant action of his muckers to go back and bring him home.
Brilliant.Well Done. That's what it's about - I honour them all. Wanted to record appreciation for a job well done - Lump in the throat lads.

Permission to enter the Mess,Gentlemen

Hi David and a warm welcome........be a regular and most of all have fun and join in the banter

And of course coming from the "other side of the fence", I'm sure the banter will flow ...

Thanks Rab - always the Scots to give me a Welcome - very civil of you.

I'm looking for Peter Hughes - not sure what Rank he was (probably Field Marshall..) as he played several instruments - EXCEPTING the pink oboe...
Could march and tootle at the same time - thus disproving Womens words, that men cant multi-task away from the bedroom..had a wicked sense of humour, and to look at him you wouldn't believe him capable of any of it - oh yes,he could speak German, and went to Evening Classes to improve, and when I knew him,he was a Medical Rep for some fancy doodle Company that gave him a car...there's posh for you..Very much like to find him - if any can help, please use my email addy.Thanks.
Apricot

I can't help, but welcome to the forum David.

Hello David and welcome to the corner of the internet where sanity is optional.

I can't help you with a Peter Hughes but I do know of Colin, Mick (AKA Spike) or a Phil Huges. The name Peter doesn't ring any bells with me, unlike Quassimodo. Can you give us an idea of his age or when he served?

anyone with an interest in the bands or wider Corps is more than welcome here, don't be a stranger.
Siegfried

My Thanks Apricot - early days yet, hope someone knows of him..

Hello Admin - quite right - should have put up a wanted poster properly from the start:-
Peter Hughes - Age 65/66/67. Probable time of service,late '50s,early '60s
Fair hair,Blue eyes. 5'7'' about 11st. RM/Bandsman - Trumpet/Bugle.
Served on Britannia - loved it.Quiet, bit shy, wicked sense of humour.
A good mate. Spoke German,family in Munich (?) possibly a Welsh Dad/German Mother (?)
We had both quit our Service about the same time - he'd been out of the Royals for about 18months and I'd been out of the Paras for nearly a year. He rented a pad on the Grosvenor Estate,in London - very posh, but was a 'Grace & Favour' type of place - used to tease him about giving lengths to strange women with weird names..all in fun.Last seen around
1965 - he and I both going in opposite directions - he went East to Germany, and I went West to America. There being no Internet available then & phone calls costing a bomb Internationally - our respective phone numbers were Non-Ops when I returned..
I hope someone can help me please.
admin

He's way before my time. I just had a look around a couple of other websites and couldn't find anything on contact deatils or his name. I spoke to our elder statesman and he said he remembers the name and will dig through his photos when he gets a chance and see what memories he can trigger. There are a few on here who served a while back who may know more... don't stop looking!

Hello David good to have you aboard. Wait until Mr Mason Sir reads your plea....He`ll know him for sure!!

Thank you kindly Admin - that's positive news!
I have had so much trouble trying to get an RM site - I kept getting the Bloody Navy, with a small section for the RM's - then the Brain kicked in...if he was a Bandsman,he would be in the BAND !!
Hopefully your elder statesman can find the one pic I remember of Pete on the top Deck (?) in Band uniform..
Thanks again.

OK Dave .. Here goes with the first of your initiation training lessons...

The Army have Bandsmen.. I think the RAF have Bandsmen(don't know don't care)..

The Royal Marines have only "Musicians"...(Unless your mate was very very old) I think.. If I'm wrong it's not my first mistake today...

I'm sure we'll find a pic somewhere..happy hunting mate..

Rab - your making me laugh - understood - its MUSICIANS...OF COURSE IT IS...Thank you for not making me look a right prat.
admin

David, it is a common mistake to make, you only know what you know from your service. I called an army bandsman a musician and they thought it was a huge compliment.
Siegfried

Not surprised - as we all know - the ONLY Military Band worth a $hit - is your lot.

Just stating a FACT - no BS Lads.

...and the Bugle(?) solos, rips the steel of the bulkheads mate.

Army Bandsmen - Musicians? - I should coco...hahahaha!

I've just had a tip off that  Mr Bass Trombone is from that era as well. He will be on sometime if he can pull himself out of the sun and put his San Miguel down long enough to operate his mouse. I'll PM him this thread and see if he can shed any light

Aaron Aardvark

My dear Cherry Bert wearing friend. I have just had a fight with Marty The Mollusc (mascot of the Band of the 3rd Foot and Mouth (Highland's Division) Diving team) who is fuming that you should say Army bandsmen are not musicians, although what the hell a mollusc would know about music is beyond me. He said that should you ever get near him he will give you a nasty nip (is that like Bruce Lee on a bad day?) on any of your appendages that should come within striking range of him.

As the Official Mascot (rtd) of the Band of the Entire Fleet of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines, I can't understand why anyone would want to get off a plane flight, part way through the journey to make one's own way down to the ground. What happens when a part time para is halfway through a jump and it runs into his own time? Do you get overtime until you hit the deck?

Mr Bass Trombone - now that's a long forgotten memory - had one year in school learning to play the Trombone...HAHAHAHA! - still can't !!

..thanks for the help anyway..appreciate it.
Siegfried

Aaron - you're making me laff - we have a sort of 'collective-mind' thing going in the Paras, coupled with a low boredom threshold - so we just get up and GO! - mid-flight makes no difference - we gone !

As for getting paid overtime - come on Aaron - YOU know the Mod.........
Do YOU think they would pay overtime?

Tell your mate Marty - as he's from a Scots outfit - a LARGE drink for him when we meet.

Welcome to the fun David!

Keep larfin' and postin'...

As one of the 'not-so-old-as-Rab' - but 'far-older-than-General-Melchett' members of the forum I suppose I had an outside chance of knowing your old mucker - but alas no.

I'm fairly certain you'll get some news though - probably (as stated by my m8 Jumpig) via Colonel Jim.

Colonel Jim has a great memory Dave. If you take time to look through his posts alone, you will see what an extraordinary man he was in the Band Service. The memories and dits he spins will have you wanting to jump out of a perfectly good serviceable aeroplane with your lunch box strapped to your back. Welcome matey.....

Steady on - haven't gone JUST yet - waiting to speak with El Colonel first, rude not to..

Thanks MJ - you still training MJ? Spending ALL that BEER money in a GYM..? Walk (if you must with trainers) and get onto a running track (college/school/wherever) Get the times you'll need to match, from one of the guys on site. In one month you should be able to do it in a blink.

To be serious - and quick - load a bergen up with 35lbs (weigh it) and tab for 2miles first week - 5 miles 2nd week - 10 miles 3rd week, until your time is 1 hour 45 mins. Then you will pass.

A 10miler is a b'stard - but its benefits will be - your diaphragm will be in its best shape for many a day - and your tootling will improve.

Get a grip mate - and just DO IT - when you have passed, you should keep up the 2 or 5 miler - why? - cos it gets much needed oxygen up into the brain and helps the Muses to do their work - as in a new Composition for the Band, entitled ''The Auditioners Angst"...

All the Best - PASS !!!

Hi David. This is a belated welcome, from a busy person, who has been "off" line for a week. Just caught up on your thread here, and would also like to say don't go running away to other forums when this is the one with the most fun. So, the general plea is to stay and join in with us lot.

Felix = ex RMB percussionist (not volly or civvie etc)

Siegfried.....
Synopsis
Act I

Mime comes upon Sieglinde in the forest, Mime, Alberich's brother, is forging a blade in his cave within the forest. The Nibelung dwarf is plotting to obtain the Ring for himself, having raised Siegfried to kill Fafner for him. He needs a sword for Siegfried to use, but the youth has broken every blade he has made. Siegfried returns from his wanderings in the forest, demanding to know his parentage, and Mime is forced to explain how he took in Siegfried's mother, Sieglinde, who died giving birth. He shows Siegfried the shards of Nothung, and Siegfried orders him to reforge the sword.

Siegfried (Heinrich Gudehus) forges Nothung
Siegfried departs, leaving Mime in despair: it is beyond his skill to repair Nothung. An old man (Wotan in disguise) abruptly appears at his door. The Wanderer wagers his head on answering any three riddles from Mime, and Mime agrees in order to dispose of his unwelcome guest. He asks the Wanderer to name the races that live beneath the ground, on the surface, and the skies. These are the Nibelung, the Giants, and the Gods, as the Wanderer correctly answers. Now Mime is forced to wager his own head on answering the Wanderer's riddles. The Wanderer asks him to name the race most beloved of Wotan, but most harshly treated; the name of the blade that can destroy Fafner; and the person who can make the blade. Mime gives the answer to the first two riddles: the Wälsungs and Nothung. However, he is unable to answer the last riddle. Wotan spares Mime, telling him that only "he who does not know fear" can reforge Nothung, and leaves Mime's head forfeit to that person.
Siegfried returns and is annoyed by Mime's lack of progress. Mime realizes that the one thing he has not taught Siegfried is fear. Siegfried is eager to learn it, and Mime promises to teach him by bringing him to Fafner the dragon. Since Mime was unable to forge Nothung, Siegfried decides to do it himself. He succeeds by shredding the metal, melting it, and casting it anew. In the meantime, Mime, realizing that by the terms of his agreement with the Wanderer his head is now forfeit to Siegfried, brews a poisoned drink to offer Siegfried after the youth has defeated the dragon.

Act II

Siegfried tastes the dragon's blood
The Wanderer arrives at the entrance to Fafner's cave, where Alberich is keeping a vigil. The old enemies quickly recognize each other. Alberich blusters, boasting of his plans for ruling the World once the Ring is returned to him. Wotan calmly states that he does not intend to obtain the Ring. To Alberich's surprise, Wotan wakes Fafner and informs the dragon that a hero is coming to fight him. Fafner dismisses the threat, refuses to surrender the Ring to Alberich, and returns to sleep. Both Wotan and Alberich depart.
At daybreak, Siegfried and Mime arrive. Mime decides to draw back while Siegfried confronts the dragon. As Siegfried waits for the dragon to appear, he notices a woodbird in a tree. Befriending it, he attempts to mimic the bird's song using a reed pipe, but is unsuccessful. He then plays a tune on his horn, which brings Fafner out of his cave. After a short exchange, they fight, and Siegfried stabs Fafner in the heart with Nothung.
In his last moments, Fafner learns Siegfried's name, and tells him to beware of treachery. When Siegfried draws his sword from the corpse, his hands are burned by the dragon's blood, and he instinctively puts them to his mouth. On tasting the blood, he finds that he can understand the woodbird's song. Following its instructions, he takes the Ring and the Tarnhelm from Fafner's horde. Mime reappears, and Siegfried complains that he has still not learned the meaning of fear. Mime offers him the poisoned drink. However, the dragon's blood allows Siegfried to read Mime's treacherous thoughts, and he slays the Nibelung.
The woodbird now sings of a woman sleeping on a rock surrounded by magic fire. Siegfried, wondering if he can learn fear from this woman, heads toward the mountain.

Act III

Brünnhilde and Siegfried
The Wanderer appears on the path to Brünnhilde's rock and summons Erda, the earth goddess. Erda, appearing confused, is unable to offer any advice. Wotan informs her that he no longer fears the end of the Gods; indeed, it is his desire. His heritage will be left to Siegfried the Walsung, and their child, Brünnhilde, will "work the deed that redeems the World." Dismissed, Erda sinks back into the earth.
Siegfried arrives, and the Wanderer questions the youth. Siegfried, who does not recognize his grandfather, answers insolently and starts down the path towards Brünnhilde's rock. The Wanderer blocks his path, but Siegfried breaks Wotan's spear with a blow from Nothung. Wotan calmly gathers up the pieces and vanishes.
Siegfried enters the ring of fire, emerging on Brünnhilde's rock. At first, he thinks the armored figure is a man. However, when he removes the armor, he finds a woman beneath. Uncertain about what to do, Siegfried at last experiences fear. In desperation, he kisses Brünnhilde, waking her from her magic sleep. Hesitant at first, Brünnhilde is won over by Siegfried's love, and renounces the world of the Gods. Together, they hail "light-bringing love, and laughing death."

I'll do what I can to rectify matters.

Bootybandy - that explains a lot...thank you.
Mr Bass Trombone

Hi Siedfried, Sorry to have been so long in getting on to this one, I have been away for a couple of week's bit of R&R and of course some golf. I can't help the name Pete Hughes , as other's have said we can recall Phil Hughes he is about the right age and the other is Mick(Spike)Hughes he was a Burgalar.I have not come across anything yet from Col Jim, I joined in 1956 and I can'tever recall a Hughes with the christian name of Pete sorry. Stay with us on this site it is fun really they take the pee out you sometimes but it's generally good humoured. Stay and enjoy your journey down the Rhine, rhymes with wine and it's about that time.
Adios. Hasta Pronto.
Siegfried

Thanks MBT - but seems a hopeless case now - if I had the wrong name - one of the other 2 names would have come forward surely?

Perhaps Col. Jim has found the same result as you??

Could do with a bottle of the Faustino Gran Reserva now...Adios !!
