The BBC have said that they will NOT be covering Beating Retreat 2009. If you want to see it, you'll have to buy tickets

I bet we will still have to suffer "Trooping The Colour" for many years to come.

The BBC would have screwed it up anyway just like they always do!!

Indeed!! They have a policy of 3-6 seconds on each Long shot, close up, mid range, long shot etc... sadly they always miss the ripples or are in the wrong position for certain shots
ZedHorn

any chance of a DVD or an amateur vid on you tube? just can't get to London from Somerset for an evening that week...

how fast do the ripples go this year? 56mph......

Betretrat 2009 non BBC coverage

thought you might like to see the reply that I recieved from the Beeb

Dear styx

Thank you for your e-mail.

I understand that you're unhappy as you believe we're not covering Prince Philip's birthday celebrations including HM Royal Marines.

The choice of programmes to feature on our channels is frequently a very difficult one to make. Editorial staff always have a wide range of items to be fitted into the time available and their choices have to be selective. We know that a programme may be of great interest to one part of our audience, but also may be of little interest to another and no matter how carefully such decisions are made, it's inevitable that some people will disagree with them.

As this is the Duke of Edinburgh's 88th birthday celebration, we don't believe it's a particularly monumental age, and in the past we've given full coverage to important dates such as his 80th and 85th birthdays.

I appreciate you may continue to disagree with this, so please be aware that I've registered your strong comments on our audience log. This is the internal report of audience feedback which we compile daily for all programme makers and editors within the BBC, and also their senior management. It ensures that your points, and all other comments we receive, are circulated and considered across the BBC.

Thanks again for taking the time to contact us.

Regards

Jamie Patterson

Wee Mac

More or less the same crap that I got from them Sam.

At the time that BBC2 would normally show Beat Retreat. The schedule planned for Thursday 11th June is, 1800, EGGHEADS. 1830, FLOG IT. 1900, THAMES SHIPWRECKS. Oh by the way, the first 2 programmes are repeats.
Wee Mac

So much for the Beebs claim that the editorial choices have to be selective.

I've also jumped on the bandwagon and made a complaint to the BBC. Well someone has to represent the spotters.
Oh, I didn't manage to get to HMS Excellent with my video camera to spot the massed bands dress rehearsal last Saturday evening.
So if anyone has managed to make a recording or intends to at Horseguards I would very much like a copy please. Of course, I will cover all costs. Many thanks. Rich.

Have you checked to see if it's on ITV?

Nice one Mac.
Pompey Rich

I've just seen the Horseguards drum beatings on You Tube. Absolutely superb. No disrespect to the Household Division on Saturday but beat that.
Pompey Rich

I've just recieved an email from the BBC and according to them Beating Retreat is much smaller and less spectacular than Trooping The Colour. Who are they trying to convince? We all know it's the bloody same every year.
riknoc310

You will not beat the Old-School tie Brigade,  Personally, for entertainment value "Trooping the Colour"  Vs "Beating Retreat"
No contest , Beating retreat everytime
Wee Mac

Do any of you old "Yachties" have the ear of the Captain General? Get him to sort out the Beeb.

It would appear, that the BBC answers with a different excuse, in reply to our e mails.

Can someone who knows how, set up an online poll on Face book !

Trooping the Colour Or RM Massed Bands ?

Or failing al else a TV license refund would be apt. Or how about both ceremonies or Trooping The Colour every three years?
Wee Mac

Has anyone flmed this event, with a view to producing a DVD for sale ?

If MFM DVD's sell enough this year them perhaps the pro's could film the next Beat Retreat. But knowing our luck the BBC will be fed up wth all the complaints and start showing it again.

PS. Should this years ceremony be renamed Piner and Son? What a superb performance all round.
General Melchett

It was being filmed on Wednesday night, pity as Thursday night was redders and HMQ and Capt-Gen was there.

Not sure I quite understand, Melch. So did they actually film it then but on Wednesday, and if so, why?

We went Thursday and the Airy Fairy's were filming the whole shooting match, so perhaps a DVD will be coming soon!!!
