By Eric: A Reunion of Ex RMBs will be held in roughly 29 weeks time at the Glenelg Motel, Tapleys Hill Rd. Glenelg, Adelaide, South Australia. Actually it's on the last weekend of March 2010. Now I've booked my room and have just enough time to wash the car so it's all nice and clean when I rush backwards to and from to pick up all those people who 'may' join me and who 'I hope' will tell me what flight they are going to be on. I hope that I'm not the only one there, could be embarrasing eating all that lovely grub.

Thanks Deli, any chance that we may see you and yours at our table on the Buffalo in Adelaide or even here in Bendigo, as the offer of holiday accommodation is still open.

Absolutely right Deli. You (as you know) only have to look at the number of 'views' and 'replies' beside each post to confirm this.
Considering there are 887 registered users only a small percentage post or comment regularly though.
Like Eric, many of the members don't know me - but they may not have heard of Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley or Muhammad Ali either - but I'm famous enough for Townsergeant to speak to me (occasionally)!
There doesn't appear to be many members from my era but there are many youngsters like the afore mentioned Townsergeant or a few Golden Oldies like Mr Bass Trombone.

Ginge I remember you very well, even if I was more a water polo coach than a Solo Cornet, yes I could play it a little bit, those in Scotland put up with me for two years, I sat between Nick davies and Jock Lyle.

Always did envy your ability in the water Charlie.
I knew Nick (from Sowerby Bridge?) very well but don't recall Jock Lyle.

Jock Lyle I believe lives Ibiza, my swimming was from before I joined in 52, but I was Tuba player in the Liverpool Phil before joining, but unfortunately I me Mr Ough, and proceeded to tell me I couldn't play a cello, yet the professor said I could, played with Mr Boardman believe it or not in Liverpool. I enjoyed my swimming days and now coaching Channel swimming, getting ready for next year with two solo's and a relay from London to Paris.

For those ex-serving down under who want to see the Corps doing what it does best, Scotland Band will be in Sydney in January/February for the Edinburgh Tattoo down under.

Sorry for the intrusion but as this this is an Oz theme,.........
A few decades ago, were there RM bands in the Oz navy, or something similar ?

RM Bands in the Australian NavyRM Bands never actually served in the Australian Navy (although at times a RM Band Service Director of Music was there on loan )The Australian Navy Band Service was at one time dressed as Royal Marines - except for badges - the cap badge was star shaped. I remember an Australian Navy Bandmaster - one George Hooker - doing the RM Bandmasters Course at Burford in 1946/47 - he was dressed as a Royal Marine and eventually became a Commmander RAN (Director of Music) when the change to Navy uniform came at some time much later.

The Royal Australian Navy Band changed from RM uniform in 1956/7 after they arrived back in Oz on the 'new' aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne. This came about in part because of an event earlier when the ship had called into Colombo in what was then Ceylon. We in the East Indies Band (S/BM Graham Shipway) were also in Colombo at that time and the RAN Band were ashore when they were recalled to the ship for the funeral of a Chief Stoker. Confusion when the ships shore patrol started to round up anybody who looked like their band because of course we were all in uniform. (Not so much security in those days.) I was one of the unfortunate RM Band who was left to try and tell these'intelegent' bods that I was not one of 'theirs'.

Re the Scotland Band at the Sydney Tattoo. Had intended to go have a "Captain Cook." Thats Ozzie slang for 'have a look'. But distance as Col Jim will testify seems a lot longer than in the UK. Now from where I live it will take me all day by train after paying lots of dollars for the fare. Then we would need to be accommodated in Sydney for at least two days. Again costing lots of dollars. Then after enquiring re, the costs of tickets to said 'Tattoo" it would probably be cheaper to book the Queen Mary 2 for a week. So our funds are set aside for the coming REUNION OF EX RMBs in Adelaide on the last weekend of March 2010. Or did I mention that some where else
