auditions

Is the audition for bass players still the same??.........place an opened tin of paint on the centre spot of a rugby pitch and get the auditionee to walk from one end of the pitch to the other without knocking it over!!!

Things have changed a lot since you did your audition Andy.
If they can find their way to Portsmouth and remember their toothbrush; they are in!

Oh come on now mate, you know as well as me that any
bass player worth his salt would STEAL the paint at the halfway line
and have it sold before he reached the touchline..

Surely you don't expect them to brush their OWN teeth in this day and age

RM Band Career

Hi, my name is Ed and I play the trumpet, cornet, Fanfair trumpet, piano, and starting the side drum, I am extreemly interested in the RM Band and would like to know as much as possible.

I will be doing my selection test next month and also going down to the school of music for a creers visit. First of all has any one got any advice for me for when I go down there? Secondly What kind of thing will they be looking for/ asking for in the audition?

Tips or advice would be great!

Well expect a week of madness! Best advice I can give you is get physically fit (go running at least a mile each day) and also practise, practise, practise!

They'll give you written tests on music theory & aural. They will give you 20 minute assessments on different instruments with instrumental professors, some you may have never even held before but they are looking for potential to learn so dont worry just be really keen and enthusiastic about it.

Then youll have the fun of meeting the PTI (very scary) and having to do physical tests, running a mile and a half, bleep test, sit ups, push ups etc, best of luck with that, it goes without saying that the fitter you are the easier it is, whatever you do, DO NOT puke on the gym floor!

You'll have a final interview, scary stuff, youll have to play in front of 5 -6 of the really high ranks, Major Grace, the bandmaster etc...answer a few questions and thats about it. Be honest and dont lie, they'll be able to see right through it.

I was in the last audition week in May and I thoroughly enjoyed it, you'll be suprised how quickly friendships can be made! Luckily all but 3 of our group passed and will be starting in September, hope to see you there!

Good luck
A

Just have fun. And most of all have a sense of humour because by the end of the week you'll be exhausted, bruised and shattered.

The instructors over there are all wonderful. Don't try and show off too much, if you attempt a horribly difficult piece just to look good you'll probably fail miserably, so stick to a piece you know well and can play with your eyes closed. Then you're less likely to screw it up.

Answer all questions honestly and don't be afraid to ask questions.

And remember, above all, however intimidating they may look and seem, they WANT you to do well and succeed, and they WANT to give you a job.

Another important thing to remember also is that every single one of the Officers, Snco's etc have gone through exactly what you are going through. That is one of the good things about the RMB and quite unique is that every single person there in an RM uniform will have done what you are attempting. Just give it your best shot and good luck.

Ed, a careers aquaint visit isn't very difficult, it is only to give you a flavour of what life in the Band Service is about and intended to be fun. You may do a PT session but won't have to do the interviews etc.
MusnShelton has almost described the audition process, not the careers aquaint visit. They are two very different beasts.

This should help you with the audition and your preparation. It has just been published by the Department of Naval Recruiting

The Physical test page has now been updated to reflect the correct times and requirements of the Physical Training requirements during the audition: http://www.royalmarinesbands.co.uk/actionmusic/phystest-ie4.htm
