Audition
I currently play the French horn and in the process of applying, I hopefully have my audition in November and i'm not really sure what to play.
In your audition do you play pieces on your own or can it be a piece with a piano accompaniment? Also how long the they roughly have to be?
Thanks

It's 38 years since I auditioned on French Horn and I'm sure it has changed somewhat since then!
Personally, I would prepare at least two pieces, at least 5-10 minutes in length. Make sure that what you play, you are comfortable with and two contrasting items are probably best.
You will also be asked to sightread as well.
I doubt that there will be piano accompaniment.
There are other serving and ex-hornists on this Forum, whom I'm sure will also offer advice.
Keep practising and good luck!

As ever, there is some (plenty of info about this if you trawl about the boards). However, to summarise, play something you are capable of - don't try to flannel or scharst your way through Strauss 2 if you can only play the slow movement of Mozart 3. What grade are you? What pieces have you got up and prepared? Which pieces show your style / technique in the best light?
Yes, you should get chance to have a blow through with the piano accompanying.

Thanks very much for the advice, I picked up the French Horn, 2 and a half years ago. I am currently working towards Grade 8 so i have quite a range of pieces that contrast in style.
Thanks very much!
