Advice Please

I am very interested in joining the rmbs and am wondering if anyone could help me on a few things.

I have played the tenor horn for ages and am wondering if it is possible to audition on the tenor horn and then get moved onto whatever instrument they put me on, or do i need to pick up a cornet or euph and audition on one of those.

Cheers[/b]

Hello and welcome 'Robbo'.. Sorry I can't help you with that question, but it's an interesting one. I do know they're always looking for potential as opposed to out and out ability, and I wish you all the best in your search for a career  in RMB..

Advice I'm sure will flood in after the guys recover from last weekend's reunion in Pompey...

Tenor horns do not exist in a Military Band and as such, nobody in my experience is or has been auditioned on one.

However, I was a TH player in my school's brass band and was auditioned on cornet, piano, flute & oboe but was sucessful on the horn. (That's French Horn to give its full title.)

I didn't even know how to hold it, so heaven only knows how I got through!

Good luck!

As a post script, I've been harrying a student of my wife's school wind band to change from TH to FH for about two years now. He's finally taken the plunge and is doing really well. Good man!

Apparently Stuey, on your audition, you were asked what instrument you would like to play but as usual, you were not paying attention and thinking that you were asked for your name, you replied Thorn and as the person who had asked you that question, was a bit hard of hearing and thought you said "Horn". The rest is history.

Good luck!

I have just spoken to the School of Music and the gospel is:
Go to your AFCO and set up the audition. Bring your Tenor Horn with you and you will audition on that. You will, during your time at RMSoM, try various brass instruments to see which one you suit and suits you. The Tenor horn is between a Euph/Trombone and Cornet so you should be suited to one of those instruments. Remember, the audition process is all about showing POTENTIAL to be trained both musically and militarily.

You should prepare and perform your audition piece on Tenor horn...
