A small queryIs there any reason why there are 2 websites for ex bandies as I note with interest that Dickie Valentine runs a site as well.
Has there been a clash in the past?

Dickie's site is generally for ex-RMB, but you will find a mix of both ex & serving on the RMBS Forum.

Some other main difference between the sites Graham:
1) This one is completely free.
2) You post directly onto this site, whereas Dickie decides what to place on his site. We check all posts and then moderate them if required. This means we can have instant banter with each other if there's more than one online.

Rab, I've just checked RV's site and found this:
| Richard Valentine wrote: | Dear Valued and Loyal Friends,
For some few weeks we have tried to pay homage to the many who continue to be generous supporters and contributors to these vast pages by using a password entry. Although having not received one complaint, it comes to mind that inadvertently we might be closing the door on people who have a viable and justifiable reason to enter our gates for all the right reasons. To communicate with old friends and colleagues. The popularity of this site is apparent. The sincerity and (at times) impulsive reaction is a testament to how much time and energy [we] have put into these nostalgic and informative pages. Therefore, we return this site to an "on trust" basis. If you happen to drop in, discover, and wish to voluntarily contribute and explore the depths of this decade long vocation, I feel sure that you will want to use the ENLIST box which follows this message at the bottom of the page. You can also Contact Me by the link at the foot of this page.
Thank you for your generosity and your consideration of the meaning behind these words. |
it would seem that they realised the error of their ways and it is back to a free site, that you can contribute money to, to be on the buddy list (email directory/find a friend) if you want to.

Well that's good news for those visiting for the first time. I'm happy to hear that, as I've been asked a few times by recently re-found mates how to get in there..

And it always will be whilst the running costs are as low as they are. Mods give their time free of charge and are largely responsible for maintaining the good taste guide and diffusing any flamable situations.

The whole reason for this site is to promote banter, rekindle the friendships guys and gals had whilst they were serving, keep people in contact, allow full uncensored interactivity between members (providing it is in good taste and doesn't compromise OPsec or PERsec).

Funny that......i never had a problem accessing his site anyway.... Backpeddling is such fun to witness however..... And frankly i think charging yer own 'family' to chat to each other is damned right necky... It would be like me organising a huge family party and charging all my rellies to come in.

You don't see the half of it sometimes Bri...
There have ben some 'irregular' posts in here which have been nuked by one or other of us just in time....(I'm doing the book)
Personally, I think ALL contact between our family is brills, but when Geedee asked the question it had to be answered.....

ooopsdidn't mean to stir anything up here.
Personally I find the other site a little "old boys network" thing. That may sound strange but I think the fact that I served such a short time is a disadvantage. It seems that it is always the same 2 dozen or so old timers who are posting essages and I have had limited contact with anyone from my time there.

.Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah
GEEDEE.!!! Apart from your Avatar. Ach!! Spit
You have actually brought up a subject well worthy of airing. There is nothing wrong with reminiscing (spolling lol but sounds right). Both sites bring together in present time what we all shared in the past. Good or bad, that's what our life consisted of. I have NEVER heard anyone regret joining RMB (ok.. they'll be out there) but let's not draw comparisons, let's allow democracy to reign. I, personally have found so much sollace and true new and old friendship on this site, I've never found the need recently to part with hard earned cash to keep in touch..
Be careful,I enjoy being controversial, and have my own opinions, but I prefer to allow comradeship to overtake my personal or selfish views on al things RMB...
After all, we probably had many more reasons to complain about abuse or hardship than those coming to the fore in recent years (allegedly) from the 'priesthood' upbringing.....
Good to hear new views...
NEXT..!!!!!!

I support the ex-RMB site, but I believe the RMBS Forum has the edge due to the fact that people have the ability to communicate and get immediate answers, as there is always someone looking in that can help you.
Look at my request for MFM 1996 on CD. In less than 24 hours, I had a copy come through my letterbox. (Thanks to Les!)
The banter is second to none!
Each site has its merits.

You're right of course GD.
I used to go to every reunion at Deal, but got fed up of seeing the same old faces every year so decided to space out my attendance - so much so that I haven't been since!!
I do intend to go again soon though.
As for this site v Dickie's, I'm ambivalent. Both have their uses and I used to enjoy popping into Dickie's site to have a mooch around - until he pulled the plug.
Way back I suggested some sort of forum and managed to catch this one right at the beginning totally by chance. I was mooching around the Blue Band site when I saw a link for the forum pages and it had only been established the week before.
Since then I have seen a lot of people sign on and not make any postings and also see them when they drop in for a read of what's going on at the moment. Of course, you can't make people join in and add to the fun, share their dits and just generally banter even though I wish they would.
So what you get is the same old boring farts like me blethering on about nothing in particular.
That's why I encourage people to join in and add a line or two - nobody is going to bite their heads off unless it's for a bit of sport. As a MOD, I try not to be intrusive and only interject when it's absolutely necessary - in fact I've only done it once and the unfortunate person who posted something of dubious taste has apparently thrown their teddy out the pram and not been seen since, which is a real shame because the only reason I deleted it was that I don't want this site to attract criticism for not being able to moderate ourselves.
I've often seen others join and not post and think to myself that it must take them ages to read through the stuff in here - it's vast!!! And it must be daunting to join in when a lot has been said already. But it's good to see newbies to the site resurrect old threads that have withered and all but died with their own slant on the proceedings.
As Rab and others say, it's good to be able to banter with each other from afar and keep in touch in almost real time.
So come on those of you that are tempted to put finger to keyboard - just hit the reply button and tap away. The worst thing that can happen is that someone will take the pi$$.
But haven't we always done that??!!

last word from me re the RMB site.Firstly Rab - just what is wrong with my avatar - criticism from someone in Perthshire where there is no football - only curling!!!
I have no real issue with the RMB site - in fact, it is a really good site to browse with many photos - some interesting - others boring (unless you enjoy looking at the some 30 or so ex bandies at reunions from 2004 to present). And by the way - I visited the site over the weekend and had access to all areas.
Perhaps it's my cynical nature, but they give me the impression that having served only a couple of years I am considered unworthy and not a real ex-RMB - this would certaily explain the lack of response I received from guys that I spent my two years with.
I was granted a guided tour around the School of Music in 1995/6 before it succumbed to the builders and the nco who escorted me around (name sadly forgotten) was wonderful and even claimed to remember my face, although I doubt that he did - he certainly was an ex RMB and had been in Deal circa 1967/8 although I recall his name meant nothing to me at the time.
Strange to say that the 2 or 3 guys I made contact with via Dickie's site appear not to have visited the site in 2 or 3 years which appears to back up mt old boys clique theory.
Good god - I have spoken at length like this for years.

Sadly I had a computer burn out and lost his email adress
