a quick hello

Hello, I am not a bandsman, but I am musician. I originate from Dover and had older family members who had links to the school of music in Deal and a drinking club on the Strand known as Club 53 (now a Balti House) during the 1960's. I am currently working in Deal and often have to visit the redeveloped school of music, despite the renovations the atmosphere is compelling. I am trying to track down an old family friend from that era by the name of Band Sgt Denis Saunders. He played trombone and lived in married quarters with his wife and children. I was also informed that he may have become a journalist after leaving the Marines. Any information regarding the whereabouts of Sgt Saunders would be gratefully recieved.
Errol

Welcome Omja, Can't help you with Dennis. I've had many a 'quiet 'drink up the 53 with Olive. Good times.hic.

I see that you're located in Deal. Have you been in touch with Steve Misson at Cinque Port Music???

By the way....Welcome.
RAB

Welcome Omja... The 53 Club a Balti house..?????

..I've got some extremely interesting (unprintable ) stories about that place. Most of us have lots of Deal memories...
Errol

I remember one particular afternoon up the 53 club. Several musicians arrived wearing plus 4s and all the paraphnalia for golf. When asked where they were going to play, they informed us that it was to be the
Staff Band Open...... On the Mini golf course across the road.

Hi Omja.

I don't remember much about the 53 club even though I was in there as much as the next man - I think it was something they put in the beer...

Can't help with Dennis I'm afraid but it is a good idea to pop in to see Steve Misson at Cinque Port music.

Michael Thompson

Welcome aboard Omja.
Anyone that participates in playing music, will fit into this forum quite well.
Muso's seem to have the most warped sense of humor and yet we also share a great love.

Hi omja - and welcome.
chiefspotter

I will get around to do a formal intro. In my Fire Service days I knew of a Denis Saunders, played trombone, lived in Rainham. He was Divisional Admin Officer. I believed he died about 16-18 years ago. I may be able to find out more if we are talking about the same person.
lesbryan

Hi there chiefspotter welcome

I was making a reference to Les saying welcome to Chiefspotter who was only making a comment that he should make an official welcome post. I think Les got it wrong, so I was just making that point, although I think I heard a big Whoooosssshhh.

Mr Bass Trombone

Welcome aboard Omja from a founder member of the 53 club. I remember Dennis quite well, but as for his whereabouts now I am afraid I can be of no help.
Errol say's he remembers having a drink or two with Olive in the 53 club, but can he remember who the original guys were?? the one's that obtained the licence and also ran the now Balti House the Strand Cafe.
Have fun.
Errol

No I don't Mr B
Probably because I'm old, not ancient. .
Do you recall them ???

Loaded question.
Mr Bass Trombone

Of course I do why else would I ask if you remembered EZZARD and WALLY, I have a feeling that dear old Olive was second or maybe even third generation. When you first used the gaff was the bar directly in front as you entered or ofset to the left, this may test your memory, I may be old I may ancient but when it comes to watering holes I am a bit like an Elephant, alway'sremember where you dangled your trunk.
Adios.

Re: a quick hello

welcome aboard.
Errol

Blimey Mr Bass they were probably selling beer in amphora then.
Olive took on the club when her husband passed away and run it for several years till it closed. She had another partner, an Irishman called Mick but he was no help to her.To busy playing cards and drinking the profits.
When you entered the bar at the top of the stairs, the counter was directly ahead
of you.It stretched along towards the window which overlooked the Strand.
One of my last memories of the place was the late Charles Hawtrey of the
Carry On films being proped up at the bar Peed as a Newt and obnoxious
with it.
Mr Bass Trombone

I remember Mick as you say he was a no good lay about. and you are indeed a younger person than I cos the bar was originally sharp left as you entered the said watering hole.
Regards to Deal and all who live there, by the way what is the name of the Thomson Bell these day's??? when I was around for Chick's farewell they seemed to be changing it.
Adios.
Errol

Its still the Thompsons Bell to date Mr B.
Sad about Chick. I was away and could not make his funeral.
I joined in 61 to put my youth in perspective. Still young at
heart though, even with the arrival of my first grandchild last Friday.
Have a San Miguel on me old son.

We actually bumped into Ezzard in Oz in 1990/91 with the doomed Trip. She was running a bar in a little place on the Nullabor. Can't remember the name of the Town, but Rod Starr knew her immediately and we all stopped for a drink (as you do).

I only remember the 53 as the way Errol described it. Charles Auwtry was a regular at the Kings Head along with Desmond Carrington.
Mr Bass Trombone

Twink mi old darling (DOH) EZZARD was a bloke with a touch of the tar brush. Did you mean Olive, she was part of the 53 club team at one time. I suppose Ezzard could have been in drag, but my guess is that old boy has gone to the big 53 club in the sky, he must have been 40+ when they opened the club in the very early 60s.
Adios.
Errol

Brian, where or what is the Nullabor for the less knowing as myself ?

OOps...sorry Mick, I thought I was adding to your memory there and not making a right plonker of myself. Anyway, we still met a LADY that was involved in the 53, beofre Olive, as I know and remember her quite well. Perhaps Townsergeant can help me out here. I've gone in a liitle too deep.
