A long, long time ago.Hi to all you Bandies. A long , long time ago i joined as a J/Musn at Deal in September 1956, 6/56 Squad. After fooling the instructors and myself I realised I was most probably tone deaf and decided to change over to General Duties.
Great to see that you are all as daft as I remember and the sense of humour is still high on the required skills list.
BTW our squad instructor a corporal DL2 once disclosed to us that it was his ambition to become a Drum Major. Some of you may have known him, his name was Alf Lamming.
My claim to fame was that I was the first in my squad to get '1 hour's extra drill' awarded by First Drill McCellan (?).

Alf Laming (King's Badge) was the Drum Major when I joined Plymouth Band in 1973!
He went on to be a Yeoman of the Guard.

Should mention perhaps... name was/is John 'Blondie' Dray, entry squad was 7/56 not 6/56 as stated above. had to check squad photy to make sure...sob...blurry old age catches up eventually. I do remember Sunday afternoon playing pops thro dividing doors in New Block to bootneck recruits for ciggys. And Corporal Bowkett inspecting fingers for nicotine stains at lunch times. Standard punishment for nicotine stained fingers was three hours extra drill.
Was in Neptune House, OC was capt Gaisby-Knight. His personal punishment for cigarette smoking was to stand in his office and make the offender smoke 20 ciggys straight off, with a waste paper bin over your head....Happy days!!?

Welcome Blondie! Still cut from the same pattern when it comes to sense of humour, we get it issued to us in week 3 but can get more free from the stores as and when the old stuff fails. I wonder if we could eBay it...
1 x Pusser's reissue of sense of humour, not used and current NATO issue. Shelf life of up to 3 months and good for sustained giggling for at least one exercise and run ashore at the end.

Hi Spacerunner.
Alf Lamming eh,the only D/Maj that could'nt put the pole up in the correct place
to cut the band off.
I remember in the late 60s at Lympstone, a certain bass drummer (piccolo
by trade) called B/Cpl.Jeff Ingrams, who just loved having him march for an extra
16 bars with the staff held tiringly in the air.
Welcome to the forum.
