Born in Poole, Dorset in 1937, Tony was brought up largely by his aunt and was sent to a naval school at the age of 12. He joined the Royal Marines School of Music at Deal as a boy recruit in 1951 at the age of 14, so beginning a lifetime of service to the country.
After serving in the Royal Marines he joined Leeds City Police as a probationer and a community constable. He later became Juvenile Liaison Officer and his background and steady character led to his appointment to the armed response unit and Royal protection squad.
He died on 17 October 2005, perhaps as he would have wished, by falling from a tree whilst helping a friend, doing work he enjoyed within sight of the Talyllyn Railway he so loved.
He leaves a wife, daughter and the much-adored grandson to all of whom we extend our deepest sympathy.
