I am sorry to tell you that my husband died on 25 August 2005, at the age of 85.

Although christened Wilfred, like many in the Armed Forces he acquired a nickname and was best know as Alfie Foy.

He joined the RN School of Music, Deal as a Band Boy on the 15 March 1934 at the age of 14. Following a typically arbitrary but well tried Service selection procedure (they observed his large hands, long fingers and his thin lips), the young Alfie found himself earmarked as a cellist and euphonium player.

During the war he served on HMS Suffolk, HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Ramillies. Whilst on HMS Suffolk, his story “Lest we forget” was in Blue Band Winter 1997.

He continued to serve in the Royal Marines Band Service until 17 September 1949, at which point he transferred to the Royal Marines as a tailor (1st Class).

From 1949 he served at Eastney Barracks, and the Brompton Barracks, Chatham, retiring from the Royal Marines on 28 September 1959.
