Do any of you 'oldies' remember doing the Junior NCO's Course at Lympstone (then called ITCRM) in the mid-sixties?
In those days Musicians used to attend the JNCO's (Tech) Course along with ordinary Marines from the various technical branches of the Corps (Signallers, Drivers, etc.). The Musicians did everything that we did with the exception of weapon training and a lot was expected of them.

No I don't remember that - long before my time !! We are all far to young here to remember that!
ITC became CTC in 1971 if my memory serves me right.
One of my mates who ended up a Drum Major did his JCC(B) in Singapore!
Well it beats Woodbury Common! _________________ Hello... is anybody out there?

No Fred, not at all. I know some chaps who remember ITCRM and trained there. I know one gent who talks about training at Achnacarry... he had a few stories to tell!
We now do our own combined JCC(B) and SCC(B) courses as and when required run at CTCRM. The course has recently been rewritten to reflect what is required rather than what was wanted. Mainly since the bands deployed to Kosovo and the Gulf have the powers that be realised that our courses need to reflect what we actually do and need to do. If you have a look on the main site you'll be able to read what the bands did during, in their own words, during those events. _________________ The Royal Marines Band Service on line |

Aaron Aardvark. Yes I think I am still hanging in there!
admin@home. If he trained at Achnacarry he is certainly entitled to the Green Beret! My brother trained there in the War so I know what it was like.
It seems to me that Musicians now take much of the place of us old Ships' Marines (if I may call myself such) in many ways in that you are weapon trained (which you were'nt in the 60's), you carry out guard duties in barracks, are in the front line as Medics and are proud to say you are Royal Marines, first and foremost, because you wear the Globe and Laurel in your (Royal Marine) Beret.
The Green Beret, as far as I am concerned, is a specialist headgear awarded for Commando training which is an extra to being, initially, a Royal Marine. I joined up to be a Royal Marine - that was all I wanted - if being a Commando was part of the package, so be it. But a Royal Marine is what I wanted to be.

I think we all feel the same - to wear the 'Globe and Buster' otherwise we wouln't have joined the RM - could have gone into the 1st. Foot and Mouth or some two and a half penny regiment instead _________________ Malcolm (Tommo) Thomas ex sticky blue

Somewhere else on this forum I posted a picture of my dad in his Blues and he's seen wearing the blue bert (sic) complete with Globe & Buster on red patch.
To be honest, I don't know if he ever acheived the green bert, but it made absolutely no difference to him Fred, as he had the same attitude as you - he was a very proud Royal - no matter what colour bert he wore.
Once a marine - always a Marine. His favourite quote. _________________ One.

I for one am very proud to wear the Blue Beret. A lot of people give us bandies stick for not being "proper" Marines ie Commandoes. But I always like winding up bootnecks by reminding them that the Blue Beret is the original Royal Marine head gear and that the Green beret came from the Pongoes!!
Then I run away quickly before getting a good kicking!!!!! _________________ "I'm not fat, this is a well exercised diaphragm!"
