I recently commented that Centaur had 2 horns and an oboe. Unusual for a ships band.
On entering harbour it was a little breezy and 1 or 2 caps blew off.
Our illustrious drum major Arthur "jigs" Lipple who must have pi$$ed off FVD to end up on a ship stated that if we put our caps on correctly they wouldn't blow off. Anyone who remembers Jigs will know that he was very "weatherbeaten" and had a wrinkled forehead. Having made the statement about the wearing of caps, our young horn player Ray Grant was heard to say "If we had as many wrinkles as you, we could screw the f---ing things on.

I'm far too young to remember Jigs while he was serving but I do remember him flying taxis in the early seventies and yes, he had more lines than the London Underground!

Another classic moment on board the Centaur.
I and my "sea dad" Norman "Harry" Henshaw RIP were down "way down" in the ASDIC compartment pinging for submarines. Harry woke the Leading seaman and said I have a sub.
The half comatose sailor said inform the bridge. which Harry did. The OOW knowing that we were surrounded by Frigates and Destroyers with more superior equipment asked who the ASDIC operator was. Harry replied Musician Henshaw sir. The OOW said are you sure bandy? To which Harry said " It's hard to say sir as there are no F---ing windows down here"
RIP Harry, thanks for all the laughs and the S__t you got me into!!!!!!!!!!!
